Jordan Love is one of the most intriguing and polarizing quarterbacks in the 2020 NFL Draft. I don’t know that there’s a greater ‘boom or bust’ quarterback in this class. You see some scouts that think he’s the next great dynamic play-maker at the position. Others say he has bust written all over him.
Love has an All-MWC pedigree, but it’s his potential that has scouts salivating. Dude looks like a natural in the pocket and has an arm that honestly reminds me a bit of Vince Young‘s the way he angles his arm and chucks it deep. He’s also a natural scrambler, showing he can move the chains with his legs when called upon. These days, scouts are looking for explosive qualities that they can coach into the next Patrick Mahomes. Love is the only guy in this quarterback class who even remotely has such explosive qualities – that’s why I think someone ultimately falls in love with the guy and makes him a first rounder.
But, what makes him so polarizing is his 2019 season, during which he appeared to regress from a 2018 campaign that saw him play like a surefire bona fide stud first rounder. There was a lot of turnover on the Utah State offense, but you still don’t like to see the arrow pointing down year over year. Not to mention, one of the most basic quarterback measures, interceptions, did not swing in his favor. Love threw a bunch of ’em.
The Titans reportedly spoke with Love at the Senior Bowl. He’s one of only a few quarterbacks they’ve shown interest in throughout this entire draft process. Despite signing Ryan Tannehill to a four-year deal, the Titans have a pretty slippery quarterback situation. Should something happen to Tannehill, there’s only Logan Woodside behind him. Should Tannehill not pan out long term, the Titans have no contingency plan behind him. So, it makes sense for them to be sniffing around in this quarterback class.
But, Love could be this year’s Lamar Jackson – sitting ’til the end of the first round before someone trades up to get him because they just can’t help themselves. That potential is tempting. But, if you’re the Titans, are you going to be the ones to invest that first round pick in him?
I think the investment’s too great when you’re just a few pieces away. The Titans are already Super Bowl contenders, but with the right cornerback or edge rusher, they’ll have one of the most complete rosters they’ve ever had. With another weapon or two, they could field the best offense we’ve ever seen in two-tone blue.
This isn’t the year to be spending heavy for the future. There’s no room for a complete rebuild at the quarterback position. Should Love slip into the 2nd or 3rd round for some reason, maybe….maybe you make that pick. But, spending that #29 on him doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, and that’s probably what it’s going to take to get him.
