Big news out of the Star Wars universe this week as it was announced that Taika Waititi would be teaming up with Krysty Wilson-Cairns to tackle a new Star Wars flick.
Disney and Lucasfilm have confirmed Taika Waititi will be directing and co-writing a new “Star Wars” feature film set for theatrical release. Waititi will be writing his “Star Wars” movie with “1917” screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns.
LOVED 1917 – that movie was a work of art. I wasn’t as high on Jojo Rabbit as a lot of other people, but really enjoyed the creative spirit behind it.
For me, it’s about what this man did for Thor. Thor: The Dark World was among the MCU’s worst movies. It looked like the Thor character was approaching the ledge, man. It was on the precipice of just completely bombing out. So, Marvel Studios call up Waititi, and what does he do? Completely revives the character and makes Thor: Ragnarok the best Marvel movie yet.
So, you bring in the big guns like Taika Waititi and it’s the only way you’re going to get me to care about Star Wars again. I’ll say it – Star Wars sucks. If you’re looking for a fun, cool space adventure, you’re better off looking at the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. That’s a take I’ll stand by to this day.
Okay, let me walk that last paragraph back a bit. I forgot – I did actually enjoy The Mandalorian on Disney Plus. But, going back and re-watching episodes 1-6 as an adult made me wonder what I ever saw in those movies as a child. The cut and dry characters – borderline holy monks vs. completely evil child-murdering rogues. It just doesn’t make sense – people aren’t like that.
I can believe goofy looking aliens and space wars. I can’t buy the dynamic between characters who are wholly good or wholly evil. It’s too easy, and frankly, a little boring. Seems like they’ve broken that tradition in recent movies a little bit, but I’ll be honest – I didn’t even watch episodes eight or nine.
I don’t mean to take such heavy shots at Star Wars, but I don’t get the religious cult-like following. That’s all I’m saying – but you get a writing team like this, and a director that put in work saving a central figure in the MCU….you get my attention. Maybe I’ll give this new Star Wars movie a shot.
