As it stands for the moment, the NFL is playing its season in full come September. As the season approaches, I’m going to be taking a look at the landscape of the NFL, position by position, over the course of the next several weeks. We’ll be talking about the who’s who of the NFL in our own little version of the NFL Network’s “Top 100 Players” bit they do every year. Up next, we’re talking about the top 10 NFL quarterbacks for 2020!
TOP 10 NFL QUARTERBACKS FOR 2020
10. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions – It feels like Stafford has always been underrated, but specifically last season, he was an MVP candidate before getting injured. If he can stay healthy, he has the weapons and the running game to post MVP numbers yet again.
9. Ryan Tannehill, Tennessee Titans – I damn sure don’t get the Tannehill hate. Sure, it’s unrealistic to think he’ll play as perfectly as he did in 2019 again, but he doesn’t have to to be one of the best quarterbacks in the league. He’s found the perfect fit with Arthur Smith and Mike Vrabel in Nashville, and I expect him to continue to produce at a high level.
8. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers – Man, it feels weird to have Rodgers so low on this list, but it’s definitely starting to look like he could be approaching the twilight of his career, and we all know that Father Time is undefeated. He still showed flashes of that elite greatness in 2019, but he’s not the dominator he used to be.
7. Deshaun Watson, Houston Texans – Watson would be a lot higher on this list if he didn’t play behind an offensive line that seems to regularly have him scrambling for his life. But, that doesn’t mean he’s not one of the most gifted young passers in the league, and the Texans paid him accordingly.
6. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons – Ryan has proven capable of playing at MVP levels, but he just hasn’t done it on a consistent year after year basis, and that’s what’s keeping him out of the top five. That said, none of us can deny the talent this guy has put on display for over a decade.
5. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints – Bona fide Hall of Fame stud….maybe he doesn’t pack quite the punch he did in his heyday, but he’s still among the league leaders in efficiency, and if he keeps playing at this level, he’s going to keep showing up among the elite regardless of how old he’s getting.
4. Tom Brady, Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Okay, okay – I get it. Maybe this is ranking the pedigree more than the reality. 2019 was not one of Brady’s hallmark years. But, he’s still got it, and he’s about to have the best supporting case he has EVER had in his career. Expect a big time bounce back.
3. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens – I get it. He’s the reigning MVP. He’s one of the most dynamic and electric players in the entire NFL. But, let’s be real – and no one seems to be talking about this – the Tennessee Titans laid the blueprint for how to beat Jackson. He’s got to prove that was a fluke and not the norm before this degenerate football blogger gives him the top spot on what is essentially a meaningless list.
2. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks – People don’t seem to appreciate how truly valuable Wilson is to the Seahawks franchise. That offense found a little more balance in 2019, but he’s still the central cog, and I think he could be in store for an MVP type of season.
1. Patricks Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs – What’s there to say about Mahomes that hasn’t already been said? The League MVP in 2018. Super Bowl champ in 2019. This kid is a generational talent, and looks like he’s well on his way to become the face of the entire NFL.
