I’m not trying to say that the Alabama Crimson Tide played perfect football in Week 1. But, they did enough to get the 38-19 win over the Missouri Tigers. And, really – it wasn’t even as close as that final score would suggest. Jaylen Waddle launched his Heisman campaign. Najee Harris punched in three touchdowns. Mac Jones played efficient quarterback. I mean, this offense was humming on all cylinders.
The Texas A&M Aggies on the other hand, hooooooweee, did they not look good. Really feel bad for all of those people that said this could be a dark horse National Championship contender – bunch of dumbasses, I tell ya (it was me – I was that person that said the Aggies might stun their way to a College Football Playoff appearance). But, if you’re struggling against Vanderbilt….VANDERBILT….you damn sure don’t look like you’re ready for Alabama.
I said earlier in the preseason that if Kellen Mond could cut back on the turnovers, he’d be a legitimate Heisman contender, and what does he do? He goes out and fumbles twice against Vanderbilt. Benefit of the doubt – maybe they’re just knocking the rust off. But, if you’re the Aggies, it is absolutely imperative that you clean that stuff up before your first real test of the season.
Tomorrow, these two teams have a showdown in Tuscaloosa. We’ll find out soon enough if the Aggies are a legitimate top 10 college football team this season or if they’re simply overrated.
ESPN’s matchup predictor has Alabama with a 90.8% chance of winning this game. That’s insane – I don’t know that I’ve ever seen that in a game featuring two top 13 teams. Like, that seems like a differential you’d see when Alabama was playing a team from the FCS.
I don’t know that I’m confident enough to take the Tide at -18, but much like the Mizzou game, it’s entirely possible that the game’s nowhere near as close as the final score indicates. If the cornerstones of that Alabama offense perform like they did against Missouri, that unit should completely overwhelm the Aggies, and the Aggies can’t be trying to play catch up while turning the ball over.
It’s a big time ‘prove it’ game for Jimbo Fisher and his squad.
