Mac Jones Makes His Case to Enter the Heisman Race

Alabama is loaded with offensive talent, but quarterback Mac Jones stepped up against Texas A&M and showed he can get that offensive engine roaring.

Do we even know if they’re going to give out the Heisman Trophy this year? I don’t – anyway, we’re going to keep on rolling with the Heisman Watch here on SoBros Network and pretend like everything is okay and we’re going to get a full, normal season of college football. Here’s the Heisman Watch intro:

The Heisman Trophy is one of the strangest awards in the sports world. There’s no objective way to win…by default, people vote on the award. So, for the most part, it’s all about perception. Numbers don’t seem to matter as much as winning and having those signature “Heisman” moments, but you have to have both to win it all. We’re talking about the big time players from the big time teams in the big time conferences.

Which is unfortunate, in my opinion. I’m a strong proponent of everyone at least getting a shot, but that’s just not the way the world works. So, with that in mind, I’m taking a look at who’s who in the 2020 Heisman race so far based on who fits the seemingly arbitrary criteria laid forth by the Heisman Trust. But, if you think I’m wrong to do so, feel free to hit up the comments.

2020 HEISMAN WATCH: WEEK 5

5. Kyle Trask, Florida QB – An interception and a fumble lost sees Trask slide a bit in this week’s Heisman Watch, but I’ll be damned if he didn’t done gone and done it again! This Gators offense looks like it’s going to be something else, and they 100% look the part of a National Championship contender. Against South Carolina, Trask went 21/29 for 268 yards and four touchdowns (and the two turnovers). He now has 10 touchdown passes in two games.

4. Trevor Lawrence, Clemson QB – It wasn’t the resounding victory you’d hope for if you’re a Clemson fan (they failed to cover the 28-point spread), but it was another solid night at the office for Lawrence, who went 25/38 for 329 yards and three touchdowns. This award is still his to lose.

3. Zach Wilson, BYU QB – Alright – who had BYU outscoring their opponents 148-24 through the first three games? That’s right – their average margin of victory on the season is 41.3. Disgusting. And Wilson is comfortably at the helm of this juggernaut so far. Shout out to the kid for balling out against LA Tech over the weekend, going 24/26 for 325 yards and two passing touchdowns, with THREE more touchdowns on the ground. #PROLIFIC.

2. Shane Buechele, SMU QB – He’s the FBS leader in passing yards, and after fending off a talented (and ranked) Memphis squad, I think it’s time we name Buechele a legit Heisman contender. Against the Tigers, he went 32/45 for a whopping 474 yards and three touchdowns.

1. Mac Jones, Alabama QB – I know that Crimson Tide offense is absolutely LOADED with talent, but y’all keep sleepin’ on how capable Mac Jones is at quarterback. Dude went off against Texas A&M, registering a mind-boggling 250.9 passer rating. How is that even possible? He went 20/27 for 435 yards and four touchdowns as the Tide absolutely lit up the Aggies.
