After a short hiatus due to the World Series, the Masked Singer returned with the unveiling of the final group of contestants. Group C as it is referred to consisted of Broccoli, Lips, Jellyfish, Mushroom, and Squiggly Monster.

The episode begins with a character straight out of Dr. Seuss’ imagination, the Squiggly Monster. We are given a lot clues and insight into who’s behind the mask during the clue package. Chocolate chip cookies, penguins, yarn, buttons, salami and a stethoscope are seen throughout the package. Squiggly Monster says people often roll their eyes at him and he claims to be a worry wart and a highly energetic person.

The contestant who claims to be “easy on the eyes” took his turn at Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen The Rain” and while not seeming to be a trained professional singer, he did however hold his own. The panel of celebrity judges were everywhere with the initial thoughts. The cast of Everybody Loves Raymond was a popular choice as well as Al Franken and everyone’s favorite doctor Anthony Fauci. I truly think Dr. Fauci has more important things to do right now than participate in the Masked Singer.

Some popular, albeit odd, takes on the identity of the Squiggly Monster on Twitter included The Rock, Howie Mandel, Terry Crews, Bob Saget and even Barack Obama. As we say here in the south, “Bless your heart.”

The show takes an odd turn with the next singer. The Mushroom saunters to the stage fitted in a dress and the clue package is voiced by what one would be led to believe is female. Once the Mushroom begins to sing Maxwell’s version of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” the panel is shocked to hear a man’s voice come through. Once the initial gender shock wears off, the gleeful shock of the talent on display sets in. The Mushroom is hands down the best male vocal season 4 has produced.

The clues provided in his package had numerous Hamilton references, a rake, a radish, watering pale, and a cityscape. The Mushroom referred to ‘wearing many hats’ in his bio as well. After nearly every original male cast member of Hamilton was named other guesses included Frank Ocean, Usher, and Donald Glover. Social media chimed in with Billy Porter (whom I’ve named countless times as other characters), Pharrell Williams and Toddrick Hall. After a performance like the one Mushroom gave, it is going to be awhile before we learn who this fungi is.

The Jellyfish was next to entertain the crowd and she packed a lot of attitude in her bright green glow-in-the-dark costume. The clues on display were very visual. We see a tiara, flower crown, an angelfish, candle and baby powder. There is also a “The Little(ish) Jellyfish sign and a “Glowella” stage in reference to Coachella.

Jellyfish gave a very impressive performance of Fergie’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and dazzled the judges with her performance. After hearing her sing and going over the clues I can’t help but think it’s Marsai Martin star of the movie Little and TV show Black-ish. The judges first takes were Gabby Douglas, Chloe Grace Moretz, Sofia Richie and Awkafina while the experts on social media have declared Billie Eilish, Snooki, WWE’s Naomi and Sasha Obama as the Jellyfish. I want no part of what the ‘experts’ are smoking.  Like the Mushroom, it’s a safe bet that the Jellyfish will be around for some time.

With only two more contestants to meet in season 4, we are greeted next by Broccoli. Broccoli is obviously the contestant with the biggest sense of humor in Group C and many think this could be a comedian. Broccoli proclaimed that he was moving from being “a side dish to a main course meal,” suggesting that maybe he has been on the bench for some time. Tik Tok was predominant in Broccoli’s clue package. We also see him riding around in a car with a vanity plate that read ‘Ladies Man’ and a mariachi trio. The mariachi trio instantly takes me to one of my all-time favorite comedy movies The Three Amigos. Could Chevy Chase, Martin Short or Steve Martin be behind the mask?

Broccoli sang a medley of “House Is Rockin’” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” which confused the panel of judges as the clue package convinced everyone that he was younger, but the vocals clearly show that this is a seasoned celebrity. Bill Murray, Howie Mandell and Steve Guttenberg were the judges first instinct picks. Something in my gut has me thinking it’s Kevin Smith, so take that for what it’s worth.

The final contestant was the Lips and also the one that was unmasked so I won’t spend a lot of time dissecting this one. I’ll be honest, I had no idea what the song the Lips had chosen was, but once I heard her voice, I quit paying attention because I knew exactly who she was. The very flirtatious Lips was none other than long time New York D.J. and talk show host Wendy Williams.

We have now met all 16 contestants of season 4 with Lips, Dragon, Gremlin, Giraffe and Baby Alien all eliminated. Who is your pick to sing their way to the golden trophy? My top two picks are Sun and Mushroom with Serpent being my dark horse.

Make sure to watch next week as Group C returns for their second performance.
