Haunted houses are one of my favorite ways to celebrate the Halloween season. There’s nothing like chasing that thrill. You know the one- when you turn a corner in a makeshift building, and there’s a figure at the end of the hallway. The only light is the flashing of the well-placed strobe. The music is blaring, and you’re a little bit disoriented. But, there’s only way to go- towards the figure. Only you don’t know if it’s a mannequin, an animatronic, or a real live person. A person that thrives off your uneasy approach. If they’re good at their job, they’ll wait until you’re a millisecond passed them, and then let out a scream, a boo, or a hiss.
Right in your face.
That’s freaking art to me, and luckily, Nashville has some of the best haunts in the state. Since I tried to cut down on my contact with the public this year, I stuck with two of the haunts I know best, Slaughterhouse and Nashville Nightmare. Both had plenty of safety protocols in place, and I trusted them.

Slaughterhouse:
The best thing about Nashville’s longest running haunt is that it’s quite the production, but it’s still a very intimate setting. The Slaughterhouse directors really know how to elevate your natural fears in creative ways. Even with the cutdown on scare actors, all of the “boos” and scares are obviously still meticulously placed. Every type of patron that walks through is thought of, and has a moment created just for them.
In the 40 minute walkthrough, you’re greeted by some of the classic horror movie villains like Kreuger and Myers, but Slaughterhouse also houses some of the most interesting original characters that keep creeping in every year.
Slaughterhouse is located in the old Courtyard Cinema off of Lebanon Pike in Hermitage, Tennessee. After you face your fears through the haunt, head next door to the Full Moon Cineplex to relax with a classic horror flick.

Nashville Nightmare:
Every time I go to Nashville Nightmare, I feel like it gets bigger and bigger. One day, I think it’s going to be a full on Halloween theme park. I also hope one day they’ll offer daytime tours for walk throughs, because their setup is pretty damn impressive. Any creature animatronic you can think of, it’s probably living in Nashville Nightmare. Any guest can tell that the owners love Halloween and want to make coming to their establishment a perfect event for the season.
There are a few different themes that you experience on the Nashville Nightmare grounds that include a haunted high school, a zombie warzone, and my personal favorite, a classic Halloween world. I think there are actually six haunts that are included with your ticket purchase. The best part though? All of the amazing photo ops throughout the grounds!
Oh, and the bar that serves up themed cocktails.
Nashville Nightmare is located at 1016 Madison Square, Madison, TN 37115 with parking behind the Madison Square Shopping Center.
