My 2020 Spooky Season Viewing Plan Recap

Stoney Keeley recaps all of the flicks he's caught to celebrate Spooky Season. Ya still got time to catch up before Halloween!

I couldn’t commit to the #31DaysofHalloween like Brandon and Brittany did. There’s just too much football to watch on the weekends and keep up with during the week. Plus, full disclosure here – I’m way too jumpy and grew up with too many fuckin’ ghost stories to go all in on the horror of the season. Plus, I watched The Departed three times in one week. LOVE that movie at this time of year…

But, it doesn’t mean I haven’t gotten in on the fun at all! I’ve had a Spooky Season to remember in my own right. Let’s hit the highlights as I watched some of the classics and sprinkled in a few new ones, too. And, don’t be shy – hit the comments below with YOUR Spooky Season viewing recap so far!

Big Natural’s 2020 Spooky Season Recap

Monster House – It’s a tradition as old as time itself. Upon the changing of the colors of the leaves on the trees, I pop in Monster House and get myself ready for the oncoming season. There’s just something about it that is good old fashioned fun, but it’s still an interesting and creative story that just gets ya in the mood for Spooky Season. If I do this type of recap every year, Monster House will be on it. EVERY. YEAR.

Goosebumps 2 – It ain’t a good movie. Let’s just get that out of the way first. I was actually a big fan of the first Goosebumps movie, so I gave this one a shot out of feeling festive. It was enjoyable enough for the time of year, but I gotta say, you’d be better served just sticking with the original. Watch this one in June and you’ll be hating your life.

Hubie Halloween – I’m in the “Hubie Halloween was way too much fun” camp. I thought it played homage to classic Sandler, while fitting in with the fun festive holiday vibe as well. It was an instant Halloween classic in my book, one that my fiancé have already said we plan to watch again before Saturday, and will definitely be adding it to the annual rotation.

Sleepy Hollow – Nothing sets the tone for Spooky Season like Sleepy Hollow. Like Monster House, it’s in the annual rotation and probably will be until the end of all time. Sleepy Hollow just exudes a Halloween vibe…just…y’know, with a lot more blood and guts and sex rituals. It’s a classic tale with that distinct Tim Burton vibe. Can’t go wrong.

Ghostbusters – Honestly, I hadn’t thought of this one as a Spooky Season feature before, and I don’t know why. It’s just my speed. If you can’t tell by now, I’m all in on those older classics that appeal to the nostalgia of years gone by. That’s what the holidays are all about, folks, and YES – I do count Halloween among “the holidays.” Sue me.

E.T. – Before you come at me, it was technically in the kids’ Halloween section so COUNT IT. I had never seen E.T. before, and man was it a trip. That little fucker dressing up in doll clothes was peak entertainment.

Scream 1-3 – Yeah, I decided to finally give the first one a shot, and I ended up just binging through the first three in one night. It was so much fun. Can I say that? What does that say about me? I love the ever-evolving nature of the story, and all the horror easter eggs sprinkled about along the way. It’s just genius, and I love a good whodunit to begin with. The Scream franchise keeps you guessing all along the way. It was a blast, and I can confidently say that at least the first installment will be added to my annual rotation.

House of 1000 Corpses – LFG! Stylistically speaking, it’s the regurgitation of Rob Zombie’s brain in the best way possible. The music is unsettling in both how it parallels the story, AND in those moments when the music did not match the vibe of what was happening onscreen. The performances were unnerving, and it all builds to a total fuckfest of chaos. There’s almost a certain psychedelic quality to it, too. It’s a total mindfuck of raw emotion from beginning to end. I remembered it being a fever dream the first time I saw it, but I most certainly did not remember if being THAT MUCH of a fever dream.

Corpse Bride – I haven’t watched Corpse Bride in several Spooky Seasons, but it just happened to pop up on demand for free, so I HAD to take this much-needed trip down Memory Lane. It’s so charming – really, it does fit in the mold of that quintessential spooky season vibe. Tim Burton, animation, death and how we deal with it. It’s a classic.

The Addams Family (1991) – I don’t remember this movie at all. I know I watched it at some point during my childhood, but man is it bad. I know SOME film critics on this site weren’t that high on the animated remake that dropped last year, but I thought it was a lot of fun for the time of year. Just go with that one and forget this one was ever made.

That’s probably all the new stuff I’m going to get to this year, but hey – can’t watch all the Spooky Season movies in one year. Gotta save some for 2021! All that’s left for me are some of the classics: Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and The Wolfman. I’m also gonna try and watch The Lighthouse again because that movie rules.

Like I said, let us know what you’ve enjoyed this Spooky Season in the comments below!
