As a part of our annual Halloween #SpookySeason coverage, we’ve decided to open up a bit of our personal lives and share some scary stories – welcome to SoBros Scary Stories. These are full on eye witness accounts of spooky occurrences. So, get your popcorn ready. Feel free to pull these stories out around the campfire, too. Today, I’m going to share a story about a bunch of us teenagers scared shitless by some noises in the woods.

It’s one of the most legendary tales in my social circle’s history – the tale of “Melissa.”

It happened about this time of year, all the way back in 2003, during my senior year of high school. I can’t keep up with everything I’ve written on this site before so forgive me if I’ve already shared this. But, my house was the hangout spot on Friday nights. We’d all meet at my place, carpool to Opry Mills, watch a movie, eat some Applebee’s, and then come back to party the night away (watching wrestling and eating Doritos). The house was also adjacent to hundreds of acres of woods, so it could get pretty quiet out there in the middle of the night. Lots of noises coming from out there.

But, y’know….this time of year, it starts getting darker earlier than usual. So by the time everyone went home from school, changed, and met up at the spot, it was already starting to get dark as we were gearing up for a rager at Opry Mills.

We were rolling five deep that night. It was time to head out, so we made for the cars when suddenly, one of us heard something and asked the group to stop. Thinking nothing of it, several of us insisted we get going. So, we take a few more steps, and lo and behold, there’s that whimper again. This time, all of us heard it, and it sounded just a little bit closer than it was before.

At that point, all five of us just freeze…we’re quiet, listening intently. We here another whimper – someone asks, “what the hell is that?” This goes on for what felt like an eternity. Finally, whatever the source of the noise was gets close enough that it sounds like it’s coming from just beyond the tree line. We hear it again, except this time, it sounds like an audible “help me.”

That’s when we all tucked tail and ran for the hills. I’ve never seen anything like it. Four big strong bois cramming into a car as fast as we could and peeling out of the driveway. No one knew what it was, and we couldn’t come up with a reasonable explanation so we just landed on “prolly a ghost.

I have no idea why, but then Brandon named her Melissa.

(Full disclosure, we actually learned from Brandon’s future brothers-in-law a few weeks ago that bobcats actually make similar sounds to this so this whole story has been debunked and I kinda feel dumb for it.)
