HUBIE HALLOWEEN
2 out of 5 stars
My wish is one day Hubie can meet Bobby Boucher because they will no doubt become fast friends. From the way they talk and are ridiculed by others to their loving mommas – these guys have a lot in common. But don’t think for one second that Hubie Halloween is Adam Sandler’s next The Waterboy. His Netflix latest barely passes as a comedy, but expectations should be basement level at this stage.
Riffing off of Halloween, there’s been a breakout at the mental institution and once Richie Hartman (Rob Schneider) returns home to Salem – it just so happens people start disappearing. Funny how that works. Hubie to the rescue as he becomes the Halloween MacGyver with his handy thermos on his hip. The idiotic antics are non-stop as Sandler plays the kindhearted, dewey-eyed Hubie who is the self-declaring Halloween protector even though he’s the biggest scaredy cat around. He’s the butt of every prank and has gotten really good at dodging everything but the kitchen sink that’s thrown at him from just about everyone in Salem. However, how sweet is it that one of the few who genuinely care for Hubie would be the prettiest gal in town, Violet Valentine (Julie Bowen)?
The Sandman goofing off during spooky season with his usual buds like Kevin James, Schneider, Shaq, and Steve Buscemi may be a treat for some to enjoy, but it’ll leave a sour taste in mostly everyone else’s mouth. The anti-bullying message is a positive and June Squibb is divine as Hubie’s mom. She should be cherished by all.
