Do we even know if they’re going to give out the Heisman Trophy this year? I don’t – anyway, we’re going to keep on rolling with the Heisman Watch here on SoBros Network and pretend like everything is okay and we’re going to get a full, normal season of college football. Here’s the Heisman Watch intro:
The Heisman Trophy is one of the strangest awards in the sports world. There’s no objective way to win…by default, people vote on the award. So, for the most part, it’s all about perception. Numbers don’t seem to matter as much as winning and having those signature “Heisman” moments, but you have to have both to win it all. We’re talking about the big time players from the big time teams in the big time conferences.
Which is unfortunate, in my opinion. I’m a strong proponent of everyone at least getting a shot, but that’s just not the way the world works. So, with that in mind, I’m taking a look at who’s who in the 2020 Heisman race so far based on who fits the seemingly arbitrary criteria laid forth by the Heisman Trust. But, if you think I’m wrong to do so, feel free to hit up the comments.
2020 HEISMAN WATCH: WEEK 6
5. Ian Book, Notre Dame QB – Once again, it’s hard to pick one representative from this Irish team. This year’s squad looks like one of the most complete units in the country. But, Book gets the nod behind three scores. He was 16/25 for 201 yards and two touchdowns, with 58 yards (6.4 yards per carry) and another score on the ground. Maybe it’s time we start thinkin’ about Book as a legit contender for this award.
4. Mac Jones, Alabama QB – Stupid yardage (417 passing yards), incredible efficiency (96.5 QBR), and a couple of scores keeps Jones in the Heisman conversation this week. People like to point out that the Tide has a ton of weapons on offense, and maybe that makes his job easier, but give Jones his due – he’s at the wheel of that sports car, guiding it around each curve, and really pressing his foot on the gas. He’s a play-maker in his own right.
3. Kellen Mond, Texas A&M QB – Now, THAT was what I was talking about when I said ‘if we get the good Kellen Mond, the Aggies will be a contender‘ on the College Football Roundup this summer. It was a big game against the #4 team in the country, one with National Championship aspirations, and Mond posted a QBR of 94.7 in the upset. Mond was 25/35 for 338 yards and three touchdowns. This win for the Aggies reinvigorated their College Football Playoff hopes and kept them in the race in the SEC.
2. Trevor Lawrence, Clemson QB – Maybe Miami had no right to be the #7 ranked team in the country – that’s definitely up for debate, but regardless, this was the Tigers’ biggest win of the season so far and Lawrence was spectacular in it, going 29/41 for 292 yards, three touchdowns, and a score on the ground. He continues to be the favorite for this year’s award.
1. Najee Harris, Alabama RB – *Whew* – I’ll tell ya, us Tide fans have been waiting for a game like this from Harris. He reminded the country of just how explosive and dominating he can be, and in the process, let us know not to sleep on him in this year’s Heisman race. He’s still going to have a say in it.
I know the Heisman isn’t necessarily a MVP award, but there’s no better example of value than what Harris contributed to the Tide’s win over Ole Miss. Without him and the ability to run the ball, I don’t know that Alabama wins that game.
Harris had a MONSTROUS performance on Saturday night, rushing for 206 yards and FIVE touchdowns. He had a fumble lost that greatly influenced the game, but I think it’s safe to say he made up for that. If he keeps stringing together games like this, he could become a factor in this year’s Heisman race.
