Welcome in to the 2020 NFL MVP Watch, where I will be taking a look around the landscape of the MVP race in the NFL this season. This is pretty much the same thing as my Heisman Watch, sooooo…like, do I want to spend a lot of time on an intro?
Shit, I guess I will for the uninitiated – each week, I will count down the five most MVP-worthy performances of the week and offer up my reasoning for each ranking. You finish first, you get five points. Second is four, so on and so forth. I will keep the season point totals going at the bottom of the article and at the end of the season, whoever has the most points gets the 2020 SoBros Network NFL MVP “honors.”
NFL MVP Watch: Week 8
5. DK Metcalf, Seahawks WR – People have been gawking over Metcalf’s athleticism for years now, especially after he ran down Budda Baker on that interception return. But, let’s give the stallion credit for developing into one of the best all-around receivers in the game today. I’ve even seen him drawing comparisons to Calvin Johnson. Against the 49ers, Metcalf was spectacular yet again, hauling in 12 catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns.
4. Josh Jacobs, Raiders RB – 31 carries – wow. 128 yards. Man oh man, does Jon Gruden love having a bell cow like Jacobs. With the way the wind was whipping around the stadium, there wasn’t going to be a lot of air offense anyway. If they aren’t able to ride Jacobs the way they did on Sunday, I don’t know that the Raiders get the win. There’s no better definition of ‘value’ than that.
3. Dalvin Cook, Vikings RB – Cook was a downright beast as the Vikings upset the Packers 28-22. In that game, Cook had 30 carries for a Week 8-leading 163 yards and THREE touchdowns. He also had 63 yards and a score on the ground, bringing his totals to 226 yards and four touchdowns.
2. Russell Wilson, Seahawks QB – Russ keeps cooking in 2020 – I dare say it’s his best season yet! Against the 49ers, Wilson was 27/37 for 261 yards and FOUR touchdowns. That puts him at a whopping 26 touchdowns on the season. That’s right – Wilson is currently on pace to throw 59 touchdowns. Absolutely absurd.
1. Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs QB – There’s nothing quite like a game against the New York Jets to remind the world that you’re still in the MVP conversation. Mahomes SHOWED OUT, going 31/42 for 416 yards and FIVE touchdowns. His 144.4 passer rating was the highest of the week, and dude has only thrown one interception all season. He can’t be slept on in this MVP race anymore.
