Do we even know if they’re going to give out the Heisman Trophy this year? I don’t – anyway, we’re going to keep on rolling with the Heisman Watch here on SoBros Network and pretend like everything is okay and we’re going to get a full, normal season of college football. Here’s the Heisman Watch intro:
The Heisman Trophy is one of the strangest awards in the sports world. There’s no objective way to win…by default, people vote on the award. So, for the most part, it’s all about perception. Numbers don’t seem to matter as much as winning and having those signature “Heisman” moments, but you have to have both to win it all. We’re talking about the big time players from the big time teams in the big time conferences.
Which is unfortunate, in my opinion. I’m a strong proponent of everyone at least getting a shot, but that’s just not the way the world works. So, with that in mind, I’m taking a look at who’s who in the 2020 Heisman race so far based on who fits the seemingly arbitrary criteria laid forth by the Heisman Trust. But, if you think I’m wrong to do so, feel free to hit up the comments.
2020 HEISMAN WATCH: WEEK 11
5. Breece Hall, Iowa State RB – Let’s show some love for the leading rusher in the FBS. Hall has 1,169 rushing yards on the season, having eclipsed 100 yards on the ground in every game this season. In Iowa State’s 45-0 thrashing of Kansas State on Saturday, Hall had 135 yards on just 15 carries (his fewest attempts of the season). That’s good for a nine yards per carry average. Hall’s having a hell of a season.
4. Zach Wilson, BYU QB – Wilson continues to pile up ridiculous stats, and because of that, he’s still the dark horse in the 2020 Heisman race. BYU has crept up to #8 in the country at 9-0, and their quarterback is a big reason for that. Add four more passing touchdowns to his season total, after Wilson went 10/16 for 212 yards, four touchdowns, and a QBR of 93.2 in the 66-14 blowout of North Alabama on Saturday.
3. Kyle Trask, Florida QB – Trask takes the lead in the season’s Heisman Watch after Trevor Lawrence has basically given us no game action for a few weeks now. Granted it was against (a surprisingly game) Vanderbilt, but Trask was fantastic again, going 26/35 for 383 yards and three touchdowns. He’s 5th in the FBS with 2,554 passing yards, 1st in touchdown passes with 31, and most importantly, the Gators are the #6 team in the country, sitting there at 6-1 with a real chance to crash the College Football Playoff party.
2. DeVonta Smith, Alabama WR – The play-maker roulette continues for Alabama, and this week, while everyone was looking good against Kentucky, it’s Smith who ended up with the gaudy stat line. Smith caught nine balls for 144 yards and two scores against Kentucky on Saturday night. I know Mac Jones is getting all the Heisman love right now, but in my book, Smith may be the Tide’s best candidate.
1. Spencer Rattler, Oklahoma QB – Just when we thought the Sooners were dead in the water at 1-2, Rattler and company just rattled off five straight wins to get back to 6-2, and perhaps most importantly, are in a dead heat with Iowa State in the Big 12. Don’t count the Sooners out just yet. In Saturday’s win over rival Oklahoma state, Rattler went 17/24 for 301 yards, four passing touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown on the day. That’s *count ’em* FIVE total touchdowns.
