Florida defensive back Marco Wilson made headlines, and became the meme of the week, after Saturday night’s game against LSU, when he threw a shoe and may or may not have cost the Gators the game. I mean, for his sake, thank goodness Lamar Jackson had to take a dump during the Browns game and completely took the edge off Wilson in the meme-verse.
But, former Gators defensive back Jalen ‘Teez’ Tabor, is in full-on rebuild mode this week, posting a long and supportive message to Wilson. In the process though, he might’ve thrown out something that was just a little too out there for me.
On Instagram, Teez Tabor posted:
“And Its Nobody I Rather Have Locking Up #6 next week than You .”
Ah, yes…the beacon of wisdom, Teez Tabor.
Look, I’m all for building young men up after a moment of weakness. We’ve all lost our shit in situations we shouldn’t have before. But, for most of us, we don’t lose our shit and throw a shoe on national television. So, yeah – football players are under a microscope that none of us had ever have to face at an age when we were all a lot more rash and thoughtless. So, I empathize with Wilson in this situation, and I support the notion that we should be trying to build this young man back up.
But, let’s pump the brakes on talking about locking up DeVonta Smith. Ain’t nobody been able to do that yet. In fact, I think the only person that can lock up DeVonta Smith is Nick Saban, should he decide to pull him off the field.
Smith is the best player in all of college football. This guy is a legit Heisman candidate – he has everything you’d want in an elite wide receiver, and he’s going to be a first round draft choice, no doubt about it. You’re talking about a tall order if you’re asking a young man to ‘lock up’ DeVonta Smith. But, I guess this is SEC Championship week, and we gotta get that talk going.
This would be like me telling Brandon, “hey, don’t worry about throwing that shoe at Cadbury. There’s no one I’d rather have hosting the Oscars this year than you.” It’s just not reality. And, I ain’t gonna put that kinda pressure on my boy, y’know?
Someone needs to teach Teez Tabor how to properly gas someone up. Now, I’ll be adding ‘take a drink every time DeVonta Smith beats Marco Wilson on a route’ to the SEC Championship Drinking Game later this week.
