Every now and then, our resident film critic, Brandon Vick, and myself dive into the history of a particular movie franchise or genre on The Vick’s Flicks Podcast. Usually, it’s because there’s a new feature hitting theaters (or Netflix/home release in this day and age) or because it’s in the news for some reason, or hell – sometimes, just for no good reason. But, we’ve done some fun deep dives into several different genres/franchises. So, I’ve compiled a handy list of all of them that we’ve discussed this year on The Vick’s Flicks Podcast, just in case that sounds like something you’d be interested in.
Best of 2020: Genres and Franchises
Ep. 49: The Best Summer Movies – link – We talk about Spooky Season movies and Christmas movies every year, but lost in the shuffle is the good old-fashioned summer movie. That’s right – we’re talkin’ about flicks that get you in the mood for cookouts, swimming pools, and warmer weather. May be kind of odd to thing about in December, but it’s a fun one nonetheless!
Ep. 54: War Movies – link – The war movie has long been a staple of Hollywood, and there’s certainly no shortage of good ones out there. Brandon and I do our best to recap how the war movie has evolved over our lifetimes in this one.
Ep. 55: The Fast and The Furious Franchise – link – There’s a surprisingly rich and interesting history behind The Fast and The Furious franchise and how it evolved from cult street racing film to full-fledged action epic. This one is probably my favorite episode that we did all year.
Ep. 56: Shark Movies – link – For those that don’t know, I am absolutely terrified, borderline phobic, of sharks. I had to put on my big girl panties to get through this one, but I did just that, as we highlighted some of the greatest creature features of all time.
Ep. 57: Football Movies – link – Yeah, we were on a roll there at the end of the summer, huh? We wrapped up a month straight of genre/franchise talk by getting ready for football season with a little discussion on our favorite football movies of all time.
Ep. 61: Ranking Horror Movie Franchises – link – We couldn’t possibly do a Spooky Season episode without Brittany Fernandez, so we asked her to join us as we all weighed in on the horror classics.
