It’s Almost Creepy How Well American Psycho Holds up 21 Years Later

In case you didn’t hear, we have a new podcast in the SoBros catalog this week, fresh from the mind of our Lead Music Columnist and pop culture aficionado, Steven McCash. ‘Drinking With…’ premiered on Monday. On the show, we take a deep dive into films that are turning 21 this year (old enough to drink – pour ’em up), and examining their impact on pop culture. We started with a cult classic, American Psycho.

If you haven’t put this one on in awhile, I’d highly recommend it because it has aged like a fine wine in my book. I was 14 at the time this came out, and probably 17 or 18 by the time I first saw it. All I thought back then was probably OoOoO sIcK kIlL sCeNeS or OoOoOoO TiDdIeS.

But, there are so many layers to the movie that I didn’t appreciate as a teenager that really make this movie resonate with me. Not only is it, as Steven McCash called it, one of the greatest “did he? Or, didn’t he?” movies of all time, but there’s some poignant commentary on the wealthy elite that even 21 years later still rings true.

It’s part satire, sure. The business card scene is one of my favorites from the film – a tongue-in-cheek jab at the Wall Street type who places materialistic value in everything. But, it’s a solid jab at the highest society of capitalistic consumerism – basically, yeah….these people are sociopaths. That’s the joke. I don’t mean to spell it out for you, but it’s just such a brilliant, layered piece of art, and it’s so relevant today that it had me awestruck at how relevant the commentary still is.

Not to mention, Christian Bale even said that Patrick Bateman probably would’ve run for President if he was around today. Let that one sink in for a minute. Did American Psycho predict the future in 2000? I’ll let you debate that. Pour up some J&B scotch, watch this one, and then LISTEN to ‘Drinking With…American Psycho’ right here:
