The SoBros Mailbag #144: Alcohol vs. Caffeine, Writer’s Block

It's lunch time on a Friday. The SoBros Mailbag is here.

Let’s face it – every day we are routinely bombarded with questions. When you’re an emerging media company in Nashville, people just want to know what your opinions are on everything. It’s only natural. And, since our duty is to serve the people, well, we have no choice but to be present. That’s the SoBro Way. Also, aren’t mailbags just a barrel of laughs anyway? Welcome to the newest weekly recurring feature up in this bitch: The SoBros Mailbag. As always, hit us with those mailbag questions @SoBrosNetwork on Twitter, email ’em to me anonymously at thesobrosnetwork@gmail.com.

Question:

Answer:

This was actually relatively easy for me – I feel like there are other things I could do to energize myself in the morning. I’d still be able to drink decaf coffee and tea, and for me, coffee is just as much about the morning routine as it is waking up. So, I think it would be a relatively easy adjustment to make to do without it. Alcohol, on the other hand, well….I just love it so much. Nothing can relax me quite like a gin and tonic on a Friday night. What we have discovered here today is that I’m an alcoholic.

Question:

Answer:

I have no fucking clue what it was, but give me one of the motorcycles from Easy Rider. I’m not a motorcycle guy at all, so I wouldn’t appreciate the intricacies of the motor AT ALL. Give me a conversation piece….something to talk about when guests come over. Hell, we have this weird, massive shelf that looms over our living room that we have no idea what to do with. I could display a motorcycle up there. I want something that I have an emotional attachment to. My dad loved Easy Rider – it was the first thing I thought of when I read the word ‘motorcyle.’

Question:

Answer:

Man, for real, Patrick – there are some people that ask mailbag questions just about every week, and I have no idea how you guys keep it up. But, I’m always kept on my toes with some of these questions. It’s hard to imagine, but I’ve been doing this weekly column for three years now, and I’ve still yet to answer the same question twice. That speaks to the creativity you guys have.

I’m going to sound like a totally pompous ass here when I say this, but I have never in my life gotten writer’s block. I’ve been overwhelmed that I have so much to write that I write nothing before. But, honestly, I have never had a shortage of ideas. Some of the other SoBros have remarked about how easily writing comes to me before, saying they really don’t understand how I can close up shop after a hard day at the day job and then come home and right for hours every night. I can sit down in 10 minutes and have some content ready to go. It just flows from me – it’s almost automatic. Now, I didn’t say any of my work was actually good – just that I can produce it pretty easily and prolifically.

Though, every now and then, when I do feel a little out of my rhythm, I will take an afternoon, or maybe even a whole day, to just get away from it all, do things I enjoy doing simply for the sake of enjoyment instead of worrying about creating content out of it, and then I’ll reset and be good to go the next day.
