The Dallas Cowboys made waves last night when they announced that they had signed quarterback Dak Prescott to a big time four-year contract with a record $126M guaranteed. This answers one of their biggest questions heading into the offseason, and it’s the latest quarterback domino to fall in an offseason that is setting up to be pretty turbulent at the position. But, I think the Cowboys were absolutely right to do so.

I’ve never understood the Prescott detractors. All this guy has done at every level of competition is win. Even in the NFL, he entered the league as a 4th round draft pick, not coveted by many teams…hell, he wasn’t even the Cowboys’ first choice in the 4th round, and all he did was go out there and secure the starting gig. Not to mention, the Cowboys have literally won with Prescott. Their record with him as the starter happens to be 42-27. That’s not just me saying he has a winner’s personality….he’s shown he can literally win football games in the NFL. That’s hard to come by.

Quality NFL starters at the quarterback position don’t just grow on trees. Maybe he’s not Deshaun Watson or Patrick Mahomes, and maybe the detractors are just tired of analysts trying to force him into that conversation. They resent him for it – I don’t know. But, that’s to be expected when you have that star-sized spotlight on your team. Prescott is great in his own right, and he’s incredibly valuable to that Cowboys franchise. Not just for his 130 total touchdowns, but for the leadership he brings to the organization. His teammates love him, and he sets an example of hard work and determination in that locker room. He’s an integral piece to the success of this franchise.

The Cowboys have some real pieces in place to make a run at a championship. They’ve locked down their leader. They have a good running back, an absolutely loaded receiving corps. The offensive line is not the dominant force it was a few seasons ago, but with some tweaking (and getting healthy), they can get back to that. This should be one of the best offenses in the league. Now, it’s time to completely rebuild that putrid defense, and locking down Prescott affords them the opportunity to shift focus to that side of the ball. They have the benefit of playing in the weakest division in football….so while they’ll definitely be a fireworks show on offense, they have some time to get this defense right and become a contender again.

The man deserves the paycheck. He’s a top 10 quarterback in the league when healthy. And, he makes the Cowboys the favorites in the NFC East in 2021. Good move for the Cowboys, period.
