Before we get started here today, I would just like to point out that I was pretty lukewarm on the Tennessee Titans drafting right tackle Isaiah Wilson to begin with. You can listen to our episode of The Unofficial Titans Podcast on the night he was drafted, and you can tell that I’m searching for the silver lining. I want to be convinced it was a good move, but I’m just not feelin’ it in that moment.
In other words, I am clairvoyant and should be respected as such. I saw the future and now I have been proven right. Just saying.
Anyway, now that we’ve established my credibility as an author, the Titans made headlines last night when news trickled out that they would be trading Isaiah Wilson to the Miami Dolphins in exchange…for…exchanging a couple of 7th round picks. I believe a 22-inch self-propelled Honda Toro might’ve been thrown into the deal too to sweeten it. I’m sure this will work out fine for the Dolphins. It’s not like there’s any trouble to get into in Miami, for a guy who couldn’t really stay out of trouble in Nashville….
It feels like a win, but I would caution Titans fans to celebrate this one too much. We know Jon Robinson isn’t afraid to cut bait, and it’s good that we’re now officially able to move on from this colossal bust (one my co-host on the UTP, Outspoken Owen Reed, called the biggest bust in Titans history). But, it’s also the death knell in what was a terrible 2020 offseason for J-Rob and company. This trade is J-Rob, like Cam Brady, proclaiming, “I. fucked. up.“
That brings his track record in the first round to:
- 2016: Jack Conklin
- 2017: Corey Davis
- 2017: Adoree Jackson
- 2018: Rashaan Evans
- 2019: Jeffery Simmons
- 2020: Isaiah Wilson
He’s only nailed two picks….Conklin and Simmons, and Simmons is an optimistic take that hinges upon the guy staying healthy and playing consistently. Conklin’s currently with the Cleveland Browns. Davis and Jackson are solid, but either -or- both could NOT be on the Titans in 2021. Unlike a lot of y’all, I’m still playing the patient game with Evans. I’m not touching that 5th year option, but I still want another year to evaluate because I feel like there’s still some potential there. But, Wilson was a disaster. I can’t describe it in any other way than an embarrassing abject failure. How often does a team move on from their first round draft pick after one season? And, before he even plays a meaningful down of football, no less!
But, doesn’t it still, all things considered, feel like a miracle they were able to get anything for this guy? That’s what makes this whole thing bittersweet. Isaiah Wilson was an utter disaster and a complete failure of the draft evaluation process the Titans have instituted. This was on top of the colossal Vic Beasley failure. That doesn’t feel good….but hey, they were able to find a suitor for Wilson, an idea we openly laughed at a week ago. It’s a win, but it’s not the kind of win you want….kinda like an exorcism, y’know? That’s what this shit feels like.
In the end, the only on-field highlight of Wilson’s tenure with the Titans is of him getting literally knocked on his ass during a PAT attempt:
