THUNDER FORCE
In a world where miscreants are wreaking havoc, smarty pants Emily (Octavia Spencer) finishes what her parents started by creating a winning formula that gives her and her unambitious childhood best friend Lydia (Melissa McCarthy) super powers to become Chicago’s protectors. This awesome action comedy is not only hilarious, but packs a punch in showcasing the tremendous talents of McCarthy and Spencer.
April Fools!
This is actually just another dud from husband/wife duo writer-director Ben Falcone and McCarthy and it’s their worst one yet. The initial idea is interesting but almost instantly goes down the drain, leaving Jason Bateman and his crab arms becoming the most exciting thing we’ll get out of this. It’s a superhero spoof with a senseless story, an unfunny script, and useless characters. In other words, an extremely wasted effort.
BAD TRIP
Having the true gift of pranking real people is what makes this often hilarious buddy road trip comedy a must-see. Directed by Kitao Sakurai, the scripted story that sets up the outrageous scenarios that shock and surprise is not the greatest. Chris (Eric André) and Bud (Lil Rey Howery) are best friends looking for that next big adventure that’ll take them out of Florida.
The opportunity presents itself when Chris lays eyes on his high school crush, Maria (Michaela Conlin), and receives an invite to her gallery in NYC. He clearly has no choice but to follow his heart across the country. However, he’ll need Bud to go with him and use his sister Trina’s (Tiffany Haddish) car. Bud is scared shitless of her, but stealing her car should be easy to do since she’s in prison. Though not for long as Trina breaks out and is coming for her ride. Chris and Bud are officially dead men driving.
The laughs come from the hidden camera gags and the reactions they cause. They’re uncomfortable, unpredictable and entirely enjoyable. Howery and Haddish have their fun, yet it’s André who gets the most buck wild. His talent of pulling the unknowing public in to his absurd playfulness is incredible to watch.
