Depending on where you stand with filmmaker Zack Snyder, you probably either love him or you hate him. It doesn’t seem like there’s much of a middle ground with the guy. He has his fanboys that think he can do no wrong just as much as he has his detractors that think he can’t do anything right…he’s all effects and what have you. Personally, I like some of his stuff. 300 is one of my favorite movies to this day, and I’ve enjoyed some of his DC stuff. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but I also didn’t think it deserved the straight vitriol it got from some of the online community. I’m about as neutral as it gets when it comes to Snyder, but I absolutely cannot get on board with this bullshit he was spewing about what he wanted to name Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Like, this has to be a joke, right?!?!
“I remember when there was a back-and-forth that I had with the studio, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was like the only title that [Warner Bros. liked],” Snyder recalled. “The whole ‘v’ instead of ‘versus,’ it was like this crazy negotiation. I was like, ‘Guys, can’t we just do something like Son of Sun and Knight of Night, or something that’s a little bit more poetic?’ And they were like, ‘Absolutely not’ [Laughs].
Okay, Zack….you’re laughing….but why do I get the feeling that you’re not laughing for the same reason that we’re all laughing?
Because that sounds like a terrible fucking idea. Can you imagine if ‘Son of Sun and Knight of Night’ had rolled out in theaters? People wouldn’t have known if it was the latest DC movie or if it was the latest Andy Samberg/Lonely Island movie. Son of Sun and Knight of Night sounds like the prequel to Anchorman. And, listen – I’m all for being more poetic…just in general….poetic is good in my book. But, do we really need ‘poetic’ in our superhero movie titles? We’re fighting the wrong battle here, Mr. Snyder. I do not know that DC Comics movies are the space to call for more art. Sometimes, we just want to watch some larger-than-life characters fight and/or fuck, and the only way you’re going to get us into theaters is if it’s a brand we know and love – Marvel, DC, Jurassic Park. You get my drift. No need to reinvent the wheel here. Just call it ‘Batman v Superman’ and throw some bullshit after the colon. That’s all. That’s the formula. I’m also guessing that the only reason Zack Snyder said ‘Son of Sun and Knight of Night’ is because ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind‘ was already taken.
And, hey – while you’re here…for what it’s worth, we’ve actually got an episode on Zack Snyder in The Vick’s Flicks Podcast archives. If you’d like to check that out, smash that play button right here:
