Spring is in the air, it’s the freaking weekend, more and more places are opening back up, and most importantly, there is an abundance of new music to be digested. Sir Paul McCartney has an amazing new album out this week and enlisted some equally amazing artists to appear on it. Beck, Blood Orange, Joshua Homme, and St. Vincent are some of the special guests on Macca’s McCartney III Imagined.
Nine-time Grammy award winner Norah Jones released her first ever live album this week. ‘Til We Meet Again (Live). The album includes songs recorded during her world tour spanning 2017-2019 and features Jones classics like “Don’t Know Why”, “I’ve Got To See You Again” and a surprise cover of Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun.” Country-rock artist Cory Hanson’s Pale Horse Rider is a triumphant album that is extremely layered and complex. Hints of psychedelic-rock are peppered with jazzy earth tones and beautiful melodies throughout the album. For an album all about Los Angeles and everything that comes with living in it, it really captures the listener’s ear and doesn’t let go.
Please check out the above albums, but especially my favorite record out this week: Losers Weepers by Babygirl.
Babygirl Losers Weepers
Toronto based pop-rock duo Babygirl release their new EP Losers Weepers this week and the fast-rising band’s latest effort is deeply inspired by 90’s Britpop. Touches of bands like Dodgy, Supergrass, and Oasis can be found throughout the EP.
The dreamy “Nevermind” even gives off some Go-Go’s vibes with its captivating guitar riffs and melodies. The theme of the song feels straight out of a John Hughes film as the protagonist finds itself in a one-way relationship. The duo explains “Nevermind” as being about one who is rejected by someone and then trying to brush it off as you were never interested to begin with. Been there, done that.
The tender ballad “You Were In My Dream Last Night” puts the listener in the feels that they have all tried to bury deep, deep inside after waking up alone after a breakup. It’s easy to recall a vivid dream where everything in the world is right and only then to awaken to the jarring reality of the cruel world where everything is not alright. That in a nutshell is “You Were In My Dream Last Night.”
Babygirl, who is made up of Kristen “Kiki” Frances and Cameron Breithaupt, is clearly a band on the rise that you are surely to hear a lot of this year. @heybabygirlband
