It’s hard to find football to write about once NFL Draft coverage has wrapped up and we’re still a couple months away from training camp starting up. The Tennessee Titans are no different. While I usually hit the brakes on covering the upcoming team a little bit, the months of June and July give me the opportunity to look back at Titans history and do a little work from the archives. It’s a bit we’ve dubbed “Offseason Content” over the course of the last couple of years, and while it’s definitely a bummer to not have real football news to talk about, I have to admit that this kind of content is absolutely my speed. I actually enjoy it – from coming up with podcast topics to finding old Titans to talk about. I’m a big time history guy. But, since training camp is set to start in earnest today, I figured it was time to officially close the book on 2021 Offseason Content. I put all of our work this summer in one spot if you’re interested in checking it out.
Tennessee Titans Throwback Thursday
- Michael Griffin – link – The Titans have always had a great history at the safety position. While Blain Bishop and Kevin Byard always come to mind, Griffin was there in between the two, and I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves for being a solid free safety. Everyone seems to remember the bad with Griffin, but he was always one of my favorite Titans of the era.
- Justin Hunter – link – Hunter is an interesting “what if?” to look at. He had all the potential…all the talent…in the world, but it felt like we were just waiting and waiting for him to realize it. Could he have been a game changer in the NFL if not for the ACL tear in college?
- Chris Palmer – link – Yeah – you’ll find I’ve been fixated on this era of Titans football this offseason, but it was a really interesting time in the franchise’s history in hindsight. I specifically remember offensive coordinator Chris Palmer coming out and saying there were unrealistic expectations within the Titans organization after he was fired.
- Jarrett Payton – link – The name ‘Payton’ has quite the legacy in the NFL. If you blinked, you might’ve missed it, but the son of Walter Payton, Jarrett, had a cup of coffee with the Titans back in the mid-2000s. Nowadays, he’s a sports anchor in Chicago, and focuses on his work in the community.
- Blaine Bishop – link – Watching Blaine Bishop highlights in the year 2021 is a nice little reminder of a bygone era. They just don’t make guys like him anymore – a ruthless assassin on the football field, one of the hardest hitters in the game, and a guy that could rally the troops when need be.
- Frank Wycheck – link – I thought this was the perfect summer to finally do the Frank Wycheck profile since we had the podcast episode on the Titans and pro wrestling. Wycheck is beloved by the city of Nashville for being an integral part of those early Titans teams in town, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to suggest that Wycheck was a little bit ahead of his time.
The Unofficial Titans Podcast
- Ep. 63: The Top 10 Quarterbacks in Titans History – link – “This feels silly, doesn’t it? Stoney Keeley and Outspoken Owen Reed offer up their lists of the top 10 quarterbacks in Tennessee Titans history on the first #OffseasonContent show of 2021.”
- Ep. 66: The Tennessee Titans and Professional Wrestling – link – “Stoney Keeley and Outspoken Owen Reed dive into the often forgotten history that the Tennessee Titans have with the pro wrestling industry, specifically Jeff Jarrett and TNA (now Impact Wrestling). Topics include Frank Wycheck and “The Tennessee Cowboy” James Storm, Team Pacman, Kyle Vanden Bosch and the Wildhorse Saloon and more! This one’s for the wrasslin’ fans!”
- Ep. 67: The 2013 Draft Class – link – “Stoney Keeley takes a deep dive into early 2010s era Titans football, specifically the work of Ruston Webster and that awful 2013 draft class, on the latest #OffseasonContent episode of The Unofficial Titans Podcast.”
- Ep. 68: The Titans-Ravens Rivalry – link – “Stoney Keeley and Outspoken Owen Reed dive into the history of the rivalry between the Tennessee Titans and the Baltimore Ravens and what makes it so hateful on the latest episode of The Unofficial Titans Podcast. “
- Ep. 69: Vince Young – link – “Stoney Keeley and Outspoken Owen Reed take a look back at the career of Vince Young from high school to the CFL, from Mack Brown to Jeff Fisher, and from winning the Rose Bowl to throwing his shoulder pads into the crowd on the latest episode of The Unofficial Titans Podcast.”
