There’s a small pocket of Chicago Bears fans among SoBros Nation, and I owe that pocket of our readership an apology today. In hindsight, one of the stupidest takes I’ve ever had on The Unofficial Titans Podcast was saying that the Tennessee Titans could exploit the “lack of coverage skills” of Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson in their meeting last November. I don’t even remember what it was exactly, but I used some random analytical stat that I had found to conclude that Johnson wasn’t really all everyone was making him out to be. I said that Corey Davis was going to have a field day against him, if I recall correctly. So dumb. Personally, I believe we should hold ourselves accountable when we say something stupid like that and put bad takes out into the world. That’s what I’m here to do today.
Jaylon Johnson is ready for CB1

Now listen y’all – I’m not saying that a video of Jaylon Johnson working out in July proves that he’s going to be an elite cornerback in the NFL. I’m saying that seeing this video scroll across my Twitter feed reminded me of the hot take I had saying he wasn’t that good – pretty sure I cited his PFF score, which I know I shouldn’t have done because I’m the type to stand up and say “PFF isn’t everything” every chance I get. Just an all-around bad move on my part. Why? Because Jaylon Johnson turned out to be pretty damn good for the Bears last year. So much so that the team let Kyle Fuller walk and appear to be slotting Johnson in at CB1. On becoming the new top guy in the Bears secondary, he recently told Larry Mayer of the Chicago Bears:
“It’s something I’ve been working for my whole life,” Johnson said. “It’s not just after one year. Of course, that rookie year is the hardest. So just being able to learn from that and just trying to take all of my preparation throughout my years of playing football and being a leader throughout high school, throughout college.”
Johnson was one of the most disruptive corners in the league in 2020, deflecting 15 passes. That was tied for 6th in the NFL. Two of those came against the Titans during a game in which I said he’d be a non-factor. He had a big game against the Detroit Lions, during which he tallied six tackles and three passes deflected, and posted multiple passes deflected in four more games. Yeah – dude’s a budding stud in the league.
I think it’s important to show that you’re willing to learn, and admit when you get it wrong. Not enough Big J Journos doing that these days, so I guess just leave it to us degenerate football bloggers to try and pick up that slack. I don’t know if it’s ego, pride, or what – but I’ve never understood people who just double down on their horrible takes, even against things that are pretty universally agreed upon. So, to that rare corner of the internet that features fans of both the Chicago Bears -and- SoBros Network, I’d say “my bad, y’all.”
