Good day to you all, SoBros Network Patreon subscribers. Welcome to the SoBros Book Club, on which I will share some book recommendations for those of you who enjoy taking in the written word. Today, we’re discussing Nuclear Jellyfish by Tim Dorsey.
I’m trying to get all my summer reading recommendations in while there’s still plenty of time to read in the summer time. This story is based in Florida, and every page of it just oozes that Southern summer humidity. I dare say you should only read this wearing an unbottoned Hawaiian shirt. Today, I’m talking about a book I completely BREEZED through last summer. I picked up a copy of Nuclear Jellyfish by Tim Dorsey, like many books in my collection, off the bargain table at Books-A-Million. I just read the synopsis on the book, saw it was $3, and figured I’d give it a shot. Man, I’m glad I did, ’cause this character is just my speed.
Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads:
Just when you thought it was safe to go online . . . Serge has returned!
That loveable collector of trivia, souvenirs, and murder methods is back with a new A‑Tour of Florida. And this time he’s out to set the record straight!
Serge is upset that his beloved state isn’t getting its proper recognition, so he signs on with the big Internet travel services. But his new employers aren’t exactly sure they want to send their customers to Serge’s favorite haunts–nor do they want to provide tips on how to keep from getting killed on vacation.
Serge couldn’t disagree more, and he sets up his own wildcat site, hyper‑blogging his way down the coast with his perpetually hammered sidekick, Coleman.
Unfortunately Serge’s Web presence catches the attention of his nemesis, Agent Mahoney, and the chase is on.
Meanwhile, professional robbery crews have begun targeting trade show exhibitors, who may or may not be what they seem. Bodies begin piling up, which is less than usual for the locale–except this time it involves rare postcards. Serge has had enough! He’s forced into the only logical course of action–go shopping at the Home Depot.
Man, I really try not to post long synopses like that, but I just didn’t know how to describe this book, and there’s no good spot to cut that off. It’s really a whirlwind – it took me a minute to get into Dorsey’s writing style, but once I did, I was hooked. Also, yeah – I had no idea that this was like the 11th book in the Serge Storms series. I just picked up well into this thing, but I never felt lost or anything.
The Serge character is absolutely insane, and moves a mile a minute. But, the absurdity in the humor just spoke to me. Plus, it was just a damn good detective novel. There were plenty of twists and turns. There were likable characters. There were villains. And, all of this was taking place in front of the back drop of Florida in the summer time. By now, you guys know I have a sick, twisted, and dry sense of humor – if you’re right there with me, then I’d highly recommend picking this book up, and there’s no better vibes for it than the summer time.
