The Heisman Trophy is one of the strangest awards in the sports world. There’s no objective way to win…by default, people vote on the award. So, for the most part, it’s all about perception. Numbers don’t seem to matter as much as winning and having those signature “Heisman” moments, but you have to have both to win it all. We’re talking about the big time players from the big time teams in the big time conferences.
Which is unfortunate, in my opinion. I’m a strong proponent of everyone at least getting a shot, but that’s just not the way the world works. So, with that in mind, I’m taking a look at who’s who in the 2021 Heisman race so far based on who fits the seemingly arbitrary criteria laid forth by the Heisman Trust. But, if you think I’m wrong to do so, feel free to hit up the comments.
2021 HEISMAN WATCH: WEEK 3
5. TreVeyon Henderson, Ohio State RB – I’m sorry, but if you post 277 rushing yards and three touchdowns in a single game, you automatically get a spot in the Heisman Watch. Those are the rules. I didn’t make ’em (even though I did).
4. JT Daniels, Georgia QB – Daniels returned to action for the Bulldogs on Saturday and reminded us of why he was so high on the preseason Heisman odds, getting the chance to pad his stats against a piss poor South Carolina team. Daniels was 23/31 for 303 yards with three touchdowns (and a pick) on the day. That performance was good for a 96.3 QBR.
3. Kenneth Walker III, Michigan State RB – Walker is running wild as the Michigan State Spartans are 3-0, inside the AP Top 25, and Walker currently finds himself leading the FBS in rushing yards with 493 on the season. He tacked on 172 yards (and a receiving touchdown) against Miami on Saturday.
2. Bryce Young, Alabama QB – Kudos to Young for coming into the swamp and maintaining composure and jumping out to an early lead. That Tide offense was not the problem on Saturday, and while Young didn’t have a particular ‘Heisman moment’ in the game, I’d say the fact that he didn’t cower in the presence of that Gainesville crowd was pretty Heisman-esque all in all. He was 22/35 for 240 yards and three touchdowns. That gives him 10 total touchdowns on the season so far.
1. Matt Corral, Ole Miss QB – My God, what a game for Corral, who took this opportunity to close the gap between he and Bryce Young. Listen, you can laugh all you want, but that Tulane program is no joke, and Corral and that Ole Miss offense absolutely pasted ’em. He was 23/31 for 335 yards and three touchdowns through the air, with 68 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns as well. That’s SEVEN total touchdowns in case you can’t count ’em, folks. Unbelievable – that brings his total up to 14 total touchdowns on the season. If you weren’t counting Corral as a legitimate contender in the Heisman race before, you better take notice now.
