Every day, my after-work routine is pretty much the same. I come home, kick off the shoes, greet my Yorkie Paisley, ask her how her day was, and continue to have a conversation with her as she licks my face. The two of us will then head to the office where my wife works from home and we share a kiss and talk about our day for a moment. At some point, one of us will ask the most important question there is and that is “what are we doing for dinner?”
The majority of the time, we make something at home. Occasionally, we will order out. One day last week we both were on the same page and wanted to go out to eat. The pandemic put a massive damper on our dining out and honestly, probably for the best. I told the wife to pick a place since she has so many food allergies that she’s basically a vegan. She came up with a few choices that are in our rotation of restaurants that we can both eat at but none of them sounded appetizing. I wanted something new.
After a quick search of new restaurants in Nashville that we had not tried yet I found Pegasus Pizzeria in Lennox Village. After perusing their menu, we both agreed it sounded like a good option. I mean, who doesn’t like pizza? Lennox Village is a bit of a trek from where I live in Belle Meade in west Nashville but off, we were.
Pegasus Pizzeria is a small restaurant located at 6601 Sugar Valley Drive with some bench seating but mainly focuses on take-out. There are no servers and all dine-in ordering is done at the front counter. The pizza served at Pegasus is Detroit-style, rectangular shaped with a thick crust that is crispy and chewy. The pizza is the headliner of the show, but not the only star. The made-in-house Mozzarella Sticks and Sicilian Baked Meatballs look amazing and are soon to be had on a future visit. If one is not in the mood for pizza, they also have a variety of salads and pasta dishes to choose from.
All of the pizzas are named after Greek Gods and Goddesses. Their white pie is named after Aphrodite while the Zeus Pizza is like a traditional supreme pizza with onion, peppers, and Italian sausage. My wife tried the Demeter Pizza which is their vegan option consisting of fire roasted peppers, sauteed kale, cherry tomatoes, red pepper flakes, red onion, garlic oil, romesco and herb vegan cheese blend. This pizza was definitely a mouthful. The remesco is drizzled across the pizza adding to its presentation. She had never tried Detroit-style pizza before and was blown away by how good the crust was. I have forever been a fan of 4-square pizzas and was happy to add this to a long list of things we have in common.
I went in a simple direction with my order and made a build-your-own. I went with a traditional red sauce pizza with Italian sausage. We dined in and were the only ones to do so while we were there. On this night, there were a good number of customers coming in to pick up orders and others placing orders while we were there. I think we may have waited 15-20 minutes for our pizza to arrive. One of the employees we engaged with, Jack, was extremely helpful when it came to my wife’s food allergies. He assured us that when it comes to vegan pizzas that they use a different set of utensils when handling and cutting the pizza in order to cut down on the chance of cross contamination. This simple but often overlooked gesture honestly put them ahead of so many other restaurants before we tried one bite.
Jack brought us plates and silverware and right behind him was our pizzas. Let me say that they looked amazing and we both dug right in, knowing good and well we were about to burn the living hell out of the roofs of our mouths. It was in the first bite that I knew this place was special. The edges of the crust were the perfect level of crisp one expects in a Detroit-style pizza and chewy on the bottom like it should be. There was just flavor for days in every bite of both pizzas. Neither of us had felt this much joy in eating at a new restaurant since we dined inside of Cinderella’s Castle in Disney World on our honeymoon as fireworks were going off.
We both were happily stuffed after three slices, but were not about to throw away that last slice of heaven. The next day, I come home from work and go through my normal routine. I’m once again in the office while Paisley licks my face listening to my wife tell me how amazing her pizza was reheated in the oven. My wife almost never reheats restaurant leftovers because it is just not the same to her so to hear her rave about this is a true testament to how good Pegasus Pizzeria is. By the way, my leftover slice reheated perfectly as well.
One other thing we added to that list on this visit was that we both believe this to be the best pizza in Nashville. I know that last sentence is a bold one but if you are a fan of deep dish style pizza, then you really need to do your self a favor and try Pegasus Pizzeria. They are opened Monday-Thursday from 4-9 and from 12-9 on Friday-Sunday. You can order online at www.pegasusnashville.com for pickup and through DoorDash for delivery.
