Welcome in to the 2021 NFL MVP Watch, where I will be taking a look around the landscape of the MVP race in the NFL this season. This is pretty much the same thing as my Heisman Watch, sooooo…like, do I want to spend a lot of time on an intro?
Shit, I guess I will for the uninitiated – each week, I will count down the five most MVP-worthy performances of the week and offer up my reasoning for each ranking. You finish first, you get five points. Second is four, so on and so forth. I will keep the season point totals going at the bottom of the article and at the end of the season, whoever has the most points gets the 2021 SoBros Network NFL MVP “honors.”
2021 NFL MVP WATCH: WEEK 3
5. Justin Herbert, Chargers QB – How about the damn nuts on Justin Herbert? Every punch the Chiefs threw at him, he had a counter for. He’s one of the most promising young quarterbacks in the game, and got the biggest win of his career so far on Sunday. He went 26/38 for 261 yards and four passing touchdowns – most importantly, he got that interception total down to a fat doughnut (0) for this one. Herbert has the Chargers heading in the right direction.
4. Dak Prescott, Cowboys QB – What a difference the presence of Dak Prescott makes for this Cowboys team. They were among the worst teams in the league last year, and now, they look like bona fide playoff contenders. Prescott absolutely lit up the Eagles on Monday Night Football, to the tune of 21/26 for 238 yards and three touchdowns.
3. Aaron Rodgers, Packers QB – Rodgers’ stat line was hardly among the most prolific of the week. He went “just” 23/33 for 261 yards and two touchdowns. But, where you saw the real value he brings to the table was in the final drive of the game, when he worked that Rodgers magic and got the Packers in position to kick a game-winning field goal as time expired. That shit is why he’s the reigning and defending MVP of the NFL.
2. Josh Allen, Bills QB – Sunday marked a big time “get right” game for Allen and the Bills offense. Allen EXPLODED for five total touchdowns against the Football Team and what was supposed to be one of the most vaunted defenses in the league. Allen went 32/48 for 358 yards and four passing touchdowns, with another touchdown on the ground, as he re-established himself as the MVP contender we thought he would be.
1. Matthew Stafford, Rams QB – Stafford just may have taken the lead in the MVP race through three games on Sunday as he went bombs away on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dude went 27/38 for 343 yards and four touchdowns against the defending champs. His presence clearly set this Rams franchise over the top, and makes them a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
The way Sean McVay looks at Matthew Stafford is the exact same way I look at a brisket I just cut into for the first time.
