Takeaways: Titans Show Some Real Gumption in 33-30 OT Win in Seattle

The Tennessee Titans pulled off one hell of a thrilling upset in Seattle.

I’ll admit it – I didn’t feel incredibly good about the Tennessee Titans going into Lumen Field and upsetting the Seattle Seahawks. It proved to be an incredibly difficult environment to play in with the home crowd absolutely showing up as a factor in this game. The Seahawks jumping out to a 24-9 didn’t make any Titans fan any more comfortable about this one, and yet, the Titans kept fighting, kept plugging away, and eventually flipped the script on Seattle. They came out of halftime and outscored the Seahawks 21-6 in the second half, pushing for overtime. Derrick Henry did Derrick Henry things, and the Titans set up Randy Bullock for what would be the game winning field goal in overtime. Some real BDE, some real gumption, intestinal fortitude – whatever you want to call it. These Titans must’ve gotten their covid shots because they had some big swollen balls in this one. Anyway, here are my big takeaways from the game…

Takeaways from the Titans 33-30 OT Win in Seattle

  • I’m a ‘bad news first’ kind of guy, so allow me to nitpick before we get into the positives. First of all, for as hard as they fought back in the second half, this Titans offensive line still has some work to do. Ryan Tannehill had another fumble yesterday, and it felt like he was under consistent pressure yet again. Those ‘communication issues’ on defense appeared to show up again yesterday too, as Freddie Swain scored a wide open 68-yard touchdown with no Titans defender within a mile of him. It looked like Kristian Fulton and Chris Jackson mixed up who was supposed to be where or some shit like that. All in all, Titans fans were ready to run Shane Bowen out of the building in the third quarter. All’s well that ends well though, right? RIGHT?!?!
  • Henry posted 182 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns, with six catches for 55 yards to boot. He looked like the guy we called a legitimate MVP candidate a year ago. I was particularly impressed by how involved they had him in the passing game. I’ll have to look, but I can’t remember the last time he had such a good receiving performance. It would be a nice little progression in his skill set if he were to become more of a threat catching the ball.
  • Fulton has now had two really good games to start the season. He was matched up against the beefy DK Metcalf for most of the game, and held his own. Metcalf finished the game with six catches for 55 yards and was never really a factor.
  • Is…did…get their pass rush…sort of…figured out? I mean, it looked a hell of a lot better in the second half. All in all, they sacked Russell Wilson three times, and tacked on another three quarterback hits. They should’ve had a safety in overtime. But, just my knee jerk reaction here – it seemed that unit really dialed it up later in the game.
  • The offensive line still definitely has some work to do, but Ty Sambrailo and Aaron Brewer both deserve a pat on the back for stepping into a tough spot and performing well.
  • After a slow start against the Cardinals, Julio Jones definitely seems to be finding his rhythm with Tannehill after his six-catch 128-yard performance. He should’ve had a touchdown too.
  • Props to Todd Downing for making adjustments and being a little not-so-vanilla this week. It worked.
  • I loved MyCole Pruitt – not only did he make some big plays yesterday, but he was playing with some real energy. For the record, I’d take him in a fight against Jamal Adams.
  • Finally, in closing, I would just like to say FAT RANDY FOR LIFE.
