It’s been a hot minute since we all got together and hashed out one of these SoBros Top 10 lists, but with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings dropping this week, we figured now would be as good a time as any to revisit the conversation we had about the movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Every now and then, we get together and debate any number of topics. Sometimes, those topics are actually safe to post in the public forum. So, everyone turns in a ballot. Their top 10 options – Rank #1 is worth 10 points, Rank #2 is worth nine, so on and so forth. I tabulate the results and spit them out into a list. This time, Brandon Vick, Rooster, Steven McCash, and myself all cast our ballots and the results are in. These are our top 10 MCU movies.
The SoBros Top 10: MCU Movies
10. Iron Man – The movie that started it all and introduced us to one of the most iconic characters in cinematic history – to this day, it’s hard to watch Iron Man and not feel completely nostalgic about how simple it was without knowing how massive the MCU would one day grow.
9. Thor – Thor was a solid introduction to several of the major players in the MCU, and showed us right off the bat just how problematic the love/hate relationship between Thor and Loki really was. This one was #1 on Rooster’s list.
8. Avengers: Endgame – I mean, ffs it’s the culmination of 11 years’ worth of storytelling. It was emotionally draining and powerful. The stakes were never higher in the MCU. I’m getting choked up just typing this one.
7. Doctor Strange – They really tested audiences with Guardians of the Galaxy, but they completely blew the top off with Doctor Strange. What Guardians did for the cosmic side of the MCU, Doctor Strange did for the mind-bending side of it. It was weird and different in the best way possible.
6. Captain Marvel – Brie Larson is badass. We get a sick trip down Memory Lane with some serious 90s nostalgia, a story with an unexpected curveball in it, and plenty of implications for the MCU moving forward. What’s not to like about Captain Marvel?
5. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 – Adding Kurt Russell to play a literally living planet only made the Guardians franchise bigger and weirder. But, it worked, and it told one of the more heartfelt stories in the MCU. I still tear up at the ending of this one.
4. Avengers: Infinity War – I’ve often said that I think Endgame is probably the better movie, but Infinity War is much more watchable. Pretty much from the moment it starts to the moment it ends, it’s non-stop action. And, it features one of the most iconic moments in MCU history when Thor showed up in Wakanda with Rocket and Groot.
3. Thor: Ragnarok – To me, Thor: Ragnarok is the gold standard of Marvel. It’s funny, action-packed, imaginative, with a vibe all its own. But, it’s also a very painful movie to watch if you’re a fan of the Thor character. There are so many layers to this one. It was #1 on my list.
2. Black Panther – As far as origin stories go, they don’t get much more rich than the Oscar-nominated Black Panther. Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan were perfectly cast in a story that was rife with meaning, conflict, and adventure.
1. Guardians of the Galaxy – The first Guardians movie was a bold play for Marvel, but they had the perfect approach to it. They took these characters that were far from household names, and they dropped ’em right in the middle of a story that was fun, humorous, and with a killer soundtrack to boot. This film paved the way for more of Marvel’s lesser-known properties to see the big screen. This one was at the top of Brandon and Steven’s lists, and clocked in at #3 on mine and Rooster’s.
