Steven McCash, Brandon Vick, and I recently got together to talk about the 2000 cult classic spoof masterpiece, Scary Movie, on Drinking With…Scary Movie. When we recorded the show, I almost dreaded going back and watching this one. It was one I absolutely wore out back when I was a teenager…knowing how cringe I was as a teenager, I thought for sure that I’d be thinking back to my days of JNCOs and nu metal and wondering, “how in the fuck could I ever think something so juvenile and trivial was actually funny?” I can’t say I’m a big fan of spoof movies anymore, and after we re-watched another movie for an upcoming episode that I ended up LOATHING, I was a tad nervous. But, man…I was surprised by how much I caught myself laughing and appreciating the well-played absurdity of it all.

I don’t know about you guys, but the horror stuff can get a little overwhelming. It starts to bleed together a bit for me (please don’t tell Brittany and Jesse I said this)…so it was nice to take in something that was ridiculous and funny but still had the perfect Spooky Season vibes. Don’t get me wrong – there are definitely some lines from this movie that would not hold up well at all these days, and I did raise my eyebrows a couple of times. But, by and large, I found the humor held up well in general, and I found new things to appreciate about the movie upon rewatch that I was too much of a dumb teenager to notice before.

What Scary Movie did well was in its sense of self-awareness. Sure, it was a spoof, but it did so in a way that was actually kind of smart. It knew it was a spoof, and so it wasn’t afraid to call that out. Not to mention, there was a plethora of little details and easter eggs that I didn’t catch at 14 years old. Factor in some of the nuance that the Wayan brothers put in behind the scenes, and how Scary Movie inspired a total saturation of spoof movies in the years to come, and I don’t think it’s out of pocket to say this movie was a masterpiece in its genre. At the very least, I’d say it’s an underrated watch come October to break up the scares.
