CFB Roundup: What’s Up With Alabama?

This Alabama Crimson Tide team has some major issues.

Let’s dive into the week that was in college football and hit all the highlights on the SoBros Network’s College Football Roundup.

*Business as usual for the Georgia Bulldogs – I mean, what more can we say? A 43-6 win over Mizzou. We keep arguing about who the four playoff teams should be, but I’m telling y’all. It doesn’t matter.

*There is something wrong with the Alabama Crimson Tide. This team doesn’t look anywhere near as dominant as it was in 2020. Again, I’m not sure it matters, because I don’t know that anyone is beating Georgia this year. But, there are some issues with consistency for this team. It’s as talented as all get out, but the defense has been suspect at times. On Saturday night, they just couldn’t seem to get the run game going, which seems like the exact opposite of an Alabama offense. I don’t know that this team can sustain a second loss and still get into the College Football Playoff this season. They haven’t made themselves undeniable. They rushed for just SIX YARDS on Saturday night. Meanwhile, the LSU Tigers were throwing the kitchen sink at the Tide as 29.5-point underdogs, and Alabama just wasn’t ready for it.

This team has to get its offense back on track, it has to be more consistent on defense, and it can’t play down to its opponent. These are contradictions to what we’ve seen under Nick Saban, but that coaching staff HAS to get this stuff under control or there’s damn sure no SEC Championship over Georgia.

*Man, Purdue is becoming the dream-killer of the 2021 season. First, they knock off Iowa and end their dream season. Next up, it’s the Michigan State Spartans. What a crazy game – I don’t think the Spartans are out of the CFP race by any means, but now everyone in the Big Ten has at least one loss, and it looks like this is going to be a wild finish to the season for that conference. I still think the Ohio State Buckeyes are probably still the best team in the Big Ten, but they didn’t look particularly good against the best three-win team in football, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, on Saturday. The big winner in the Big Ten cannibalizing itself just may be the Oklahoma Sooners.

*Oh boy…another week, and another tough gutsy win against a vastly inferior opponent for the Cincinnati Bearcats. They beat Tulsa 28-20, and didn’t look particularly good in the process. The important thing is that they keep winning, and other teams around them keep losing. But, it’s obvious this CFP committee doesn’t think as highly of the Bearcats as the AP does. Still…they’re 9-0, and if they keep winning, it’s going to be hard to keep them out.

*So long, sweet prince (I am talking about Sam Hartman here). It was fun while it lasted, but the CFP hopes for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons are officially over. There were rumblings all week long about how their 8-0 start came at the benefit of not playing anyone, and that this North Carolina would be able to go out there and score with that potent offense. That proved true, and now, another previously unbeaten has fallen.

*Absolutely did not see the South Carolina Gamecocks kicking Florida’s shit in. I thought they’d cover, but not outright dominate. Florida baby wut is you doing?

*Eliminated from the CFP Race: I do think that’ll do it for Wake Forest, and really, the ACC as a whole. There’s just no one in that conference with a path to get up ahead of all of the Big Ten teams, Big 12 teams, SEC teams, Cincinnati, and even Notre Dame and Oregon. The top 10 is crowded right now, and I just don’t see how even just a one-loss ACC team can sneak in. I also think you put a nail in the coffin of the CFP hopes for the Baylor Bears as well. A close, ugly loss to a TCU team in disarray with a losing record will do that.

*Conference championship match-ups based on current standings (I just think these are funny and/or interesting to lookout throughout the season, so figured I’d share ’em with y’all):

  • AAC: Houston vs. Cincinnati
  • ACC: Wake Forest vs. Pitt
  • Big 12: Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State
  • Big Ten: Ohio State vs. Wisconsin
  • C-USA: Marshall vs. UTSA
  • MAC: Kent State vs. Northern Illinois
  • MWC: Utah State vs. San Diego State
  • Pac-12: Oregon vs. Utah
  • SEC: Georgia vs. Alabama
  • Sun Belt: Appalachian State vs. Louisiana

*Personally, my top college football top 10 would look like this:

  1. Georgia
  2. Alabama
  3. Ohio State
  4. Cincinnati
  5. Oregon
  6. Texas A&M
  7. Michigan State
  8. Oklahoma
  9. Notre Dame
  10. Michigan
