Athletic, Versatile Cole Strange Looks Like the Perfect Mid-Round Target for the Tennessee Titans

UT-Chattanooga's Cole Strange showed out at the Senior Bowl last week. He's a perfect fit for the Tennessee Titans.

The Super Bowl window is open for the Tennessee Titans, but it won’t be open forever. Part of what has gotten them to this point is their solid offensive line play. It’s something that the franchise has been known for in the past, and while general manager Jon Robinson‘s last two early-round draft picks along the offensive line haven’t exactly been home runs, this regime has shown a knack for developing homegrown offensive linemen that they’ve been able to snag in the middle rounds of the NFL Draft or later. As the offensive line continues to age and contracts expire, I expect the Titans to start building towards the future this offseason. It just so happens that this is a hell of a draft to be in need of offensive line help. One of the guys who has stood out the most to me as the draft process kicks off in earnest is UT-Chattanooga offensive lineman Cole Strange.

What stands out about Strange right off the bat is his versatility – dude has experience at center, guard, and tackle along the offensive line. He’s big – standing at 6’4″ and weighing 304 pounds, but is smooth in his movement, but utilizes his hands well and packs a punch. Strange always seems to be out ahead of the play, looking to get to the second level to make a play. I noticed him make a hell of a block in space that helped to spring Tyler Badie open on a play in practice at the Senior Bowl last week. He plays with leverage and a wide base, so it’s hard to move him on a consistent basis – I noticed that when a guy beat him in a 1:1 rep last week in Mobile, he was quick to correct course and make sure they didn’t beat him again. He has that sort of tough, finisher’s mentality. His athleticism lends itself well towards a zone blocking scheme, where a staff can really get creative with Strange.

What we learned about Strange at the Senior Bowl is that he definitely belongs with the elite talent and upside in this draft class. Those are some quality reps against two guys that absolutely dominated the headlines on the defensive side of the ball last week – Perrion Winfrey and Travis Jones. Strange absolutely looks like he has a ceiling as a quality NFL starter. The moment most definitely wasn’t too big for the solid, strong, and athletic lineman.

They had him playing center last week in Mobile. If that’s an indication as to how he’s projected in the NFL, selecting him would provide the Titans with the opportunity to groom the center of the future. But, hell – the Titans like having that swing lineman out there – the “sixth man” type, if you will. Strange fits that bill, too. Robinson and Vrabel love those experienced players with productive careers in college. Between that and the versatility and fight Strange brings to the table, he looks like the perfect Tennessee Titan to me.
