In case you haven’t noticed, we talk about movies an awful lot around these parts. In fact, I dare say we have more movie content on the site than anything other than football. During the early onset of the covid-19 pandemic, back when the streets were bare, and things were really locked down, the team got together and came up with a list of a bunch of random movies that you should take the opportunity to see if you hadn’t already. It was a way to add some entertainment to your quarantine, and we had a lot of fun that was much-needed at the time. I was thinking about doing this again some time soon – not sure why the idea popped back into my head, but I figured it’d be a fun bit to launch here on Patreon…just completely random movies that we love. I’ll be checking in with the SoBros team from time to time on this one, but for now, I’ll get started with a few that have been in my brain recently.
Also, I have no idea where you can actually stream/watch these. That’s on you – otherwise, this would be one of those “what’s on Netflix this week” kind of articles…
Random Movie Suggestions, Vol. 1
15 Things You Didn’t Know About Bigfoot: Number 1 Will Blow Your Mind – I actually reviewed this one as apart of the 2020 Atlanta Film Festival. I have no idea how you’d find it these days, but it was a surprising, light-hearted, and absurd comedy that was just my speed. If you’re into our brand of humor, this will be right up your alley too. I am of the opinion that more people need to be aware of this movie’s existence.
The Disaster Artist – I know we’ve learned that James Franco is…just….a little gross. I get it. But, I still think he’s a really interesting actor, and the fact that Tommy Wiseau even happened in Hollywood is amazing. Put the two together, and it’s pure gold. The creation of The Room is one of the wildest and weirdest stories in film history, and seeing a talented cast tackle that story in the form of The Disaster Artist was pure art.
Arrival – After catching Dune late last year, I wanted to make a concerted effort to go back and watch the rest of the Denis Villeneuve catalog. So, I noticed Arrival on Hulu a couple of weeks ago and decided to give it a go. Usually, the whole alien invasion angle would make you think you’re in for an action-packed adventure. But, that’s not the case here – what we have instead is a slow-burn story that’s much more human. It’s beautifully shot and comes with a surprising little twist at the end. Don’t expect explosions and destruction – do expect phenomenal performances from Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker.
MacGruber – I guess it’s not so random since there’s a new MacGruber series on Peacock, and that does explain why my social circle is revisiting the MacGruber conversation all these years later. I can’t think of a more polarizing movie among my friends – some people, like me, loved it for how outrageous and over-the-top it was. Others hated it, calling it stupid and pointless. It’s a surprise because most of us have the same dumb sense of humor. Watch the movie and see where you land on the great MacGruber debate.
Big Fish – I always think about Big Fish at this time of the year…probably because after being released on Christmas day in 2003, it was the first movie I saw in theaters in 2004…the year I graduated from high school. And, yes….I know I’m weird for remembering stuff like that…but I do. Anything from that period instantly takes me back to that spring of ’04…being so anxious about the future without realizing how truly good I had it at the time. For all of the weird and unusual stuff that Tim Burton has done, Big Fish is lost in the shuffle. But, it’s a heart-warming fantasy/drama about a son struggling to sift through his father’s tall tales. Of course, it does have a good bit of that Burton weirdness to it too.
If you check any of these out this weekend, be sure to let me know what you think!
