The sequel to the beloved 90s Halloween flick, Hocus Pocus, is set to drop on Disney+ on October 31st, 2022. That announcement no doubt gets my spooky heart a-thumping, but I also have some major concerns.
The OG is a staple that Halloween lovers visit every year. Hell, sometimes even in the off season if they’re yearning for a little autumn magic. It’s also on every “must watch during October” list out there. Freeform has it queued up from AM-PM during the month. It’s a big deal.
I’m just nervous that there will be too much present-day elements featured in Hocus Pocus 2 that will lead to Winifred Sanderson doing a Tik-Tok dance. I understand that I sound like a bitter old man yelling at a jack-o-lantern shaped cloud, but what makes the 1993 film so appealing is the vintage feel. It’s dreamy – and yes, a bit campy – but I don’t think it can be touched. How long we will be chasing nostalgia for profit? Especially when there is no way in the dark lord’s hell that it will be better than the original. If it is, I’ll eat a plate of worms.
Am I going to watch it? Of course I am. I naively watched that sequel to The Craft and wished I hadn’t. I will not learn from past mistakes on this one.
The things that DO get me excited about Hocus Pocus 2 are as follows:
- Doug Jones returning as Billy Butcherson (greatest creature actor living today)
- Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Middler, and Kathy Najimy returning as the three sisters (hilarious together in the original)
- New England filming locations (autumn leaves, autumn leaves, autumn leaves)
Lastly, since it will be dropping on Halloween, it might be a good excuse to have a Hocus Pocus-themed party. More on that later, though.
