First things first, go subscribe to Drinking With… on Apple Podcasts (or wherever you take in your shows for that matter), and check out our catalog of fun episodes as Steven McCash walks us through movies that have surpassed the legal drinking age. Now that you’ve done that (thank you), let’s talk about our latest episode on Black Hawk Down.
Admittedly, this was my first time viewing this film ever. That’s one of the things I love about doing Drinking With… and is one of the many reasons I’m grateful to have been included on the project. We’re 18 episodes in (two haven’t been released yet), and I’ve seen four movies that I’ve never seen before (two of those (Black Hawk Down included (the other being Best In Show)) have cracked my ‘top 100 movies all time’ list). All the while, I’m getting to revisit some classics of yesteryear. Nonetheless, I say this to say that I went into this viewing without really knowing what to expect. I knew it was a war movie, and that it was popular among my social circle at the time. What I didn’t expect, however, was to be blown away the way that I was.
War movies can be hit or miss. Sometimes, they can be long, drawn-out, and boring. But, that wasn’t the case at all with Black Hawk Down. It took a minute to get going, but once it did, it felt like one continuous action scene until the end. The sound was incredible, and the way it was shot put you right in the middle of the action. At times, it gave me that classic transcendent feeling that good movies give you, when the real world is supplanted by the story you’re watching unfold. I remembered seeing this one listed in a piece that Cadbury wrote a few years ago – he called it “an amazing story of teamwork, heartbreak, and courage.” I couldn’t agree more. Also, what ever happened to Josh Hartnett?
