With the addition of support classes to the 80th running of the Daytona 200, we get the opportunity to see a variety of bikes take to the banking of Daytona International Speedway. One of the most anticipated and action-packed of these classes is the SuperHooligans.

Leading the pack through qualifying was Andy DiBrino, who put his KTM 890 Duke R into pole position. We spoke with Andy before Race 1, and he had the following to say:

“This is my first time at Daytona, I’m learning every single lap I’m out there. I think it’s gonna be tough to break away, I’ve got some really experienced competitors like Tyler O’Hara who has won races here before. It’s probably going to come down to the draft. I don’t have the experience with that here, but I have an idea from watching other races so I think I’ll be able to put myself in a good position and get a win.”

Needless to say, Andy’s homework paid off as he made a bold move coming out of the final chicane on the last lap to let Cory West pass him aboard the Saddlemen/Lloyd’z Garage Indian machine. From here, DiBrino tucked in and took advantage of the draft to slingshot around West just before the finish line for the win.

Following close behind this duo at the front was Tyler O’Hara, who took his Roland Sands Design Indian FTR1200 from the back of the grid all the way up to third position. With one or two more laps, he would’ve been a serious contender for the win.

With day one completed, we’re hoping the rain holds off so we can see more of this close racing tomorrow!
