Titans Draft Roundup: Anything Is Possible

The Tennessee Titans are in a good position to do a myriad of things at #26, including trading back from #26...

Welcome to the weekly Tennessee Titans draft roundup for the 2022 NFL Draft. Over the course of the next several weeks, I’ll be releasing this column once a week with my very professional journalism opinions. You’ll find everything from rumors to wild speculation to actual analysis (sometimes). Titan up!

*On the options at #26, general manager Jon Robinson told Jim Wyatt of TitansOnline:

“I would say that no position is off the table if we think they can help our football team. We’ll try to position ourselves to take the best player that we think can help our football team there at 26, and when we’re on the clock again. “But,” Robinson added, “we’d love to have more picks, if we can trade.”

Yeah – I don’t think there’s any smoke and mirrors with JRob here. I absolutely believe it. I think if it were 100% up to him, they would slide back out of #26 and back into the 2nd round with another pick or two. It just takes two to tango, and I don’t know who is going to be beating down the door to get that pick. Now, there are two ways of looking at it. One, the more quarterbacks taken ahead of the Titans, the more other players at positions of greater need will be available in that spot. Two, the less quarterbacks taken ahead of the Titans, the greater the potential for someone to want to trade up and grab one of the quarterbacks.

Regardless of what happens, I think the Titans are in a great position for this draft to just reload the already-talented roster that Titans Twitter would have you believe isn’t currently good enough to win a Super Bowl even though it totally is. I have no idea if that last sentence even made sense. I blacked out.

So, yeah – I don’t think the Titans are tied to any one position at #26, and running back and defensive line are about the only positions they could go with that would truly surprise me. I genuinely believe that JRob will just draft the best guy in that spot.

*Add Calvin Austin III to the list of guys the Titans have met with. Color me shocked.

I love me some CA3, even if he did leave my interview request on read. No hard feelings – sometimes, I don’t even like talking to me. But, he is the exact dynamic that the Titans passing game is currently missing and yet, he plays it with a physical explosive style that the Titans like in their wide receivers. I would love to see him in the two-tone blue, but I had admittedly written him off because he doesn’t fit their typical size profile in what they’ve been adding at receiver. So, I’m pleasantly surprised to read this.

*They’re making the rounds on the defensive front as well. According to Ben Arthur, they’ve got a meeting with DL Esezi Otomewo on the books. Full transparency, I haven’t watched any of Otomewo at all, but it’s intriguing to me that they’re spending visits on defensive lineman. Truly reinforces what I said earlier that nothing is off the table, and JRob and company are going to be ready for however the dominos fall. I don’t think I’d even be considering DL help in the draft (especially given their track record with UDFA DL talent), but whatever helps the team, I suppose.

*It sounds like things are progressing well for Caleb Farley as he works back from injury. But, it’s like I mentioned up top, cornerback is one of those positions that people are sleeping on when it wouldn’t surprise me to see JRob pull the trigger on one at #26. What if Farley doesn’t come back fully healthy? They’ve cut Jackrabbit Jenkins – is Buster Skrine enough to fill that role? I know Elijah Molden and Christ Jackson are on an ascending trajectory in the league. But, would it really surprise anyone if they added some elite talent for competition? Not me. That’s why I raised my eyebrows a bit when I saw that they had met with Alontae Taylor.

Taylor has good awareness, underrated closing speed, and underrated overall athleticism. I think he’d be a great addition to the Titans’ defensive backfield. Some teams are working him out at safety – others at cornerback. His versatility definitely brings something valuable to the table to boot. He’s definitely a prospect worth keeping your eyes on.

*Add Jahan Dotson to the list of guys that make me cringe every time I see them mocked to the Titans. I think he will be a fine receiver in the NFL if he ends up in the right situation. To me, he makes too much sense for the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round. Hell, put him with Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills offense. Hell, put him with the New York Giants and the guy that has been coaching Allen and that Bills offense lately. But, don’t put him in Nashville. He’s just not the physical presence this team likes, and I don’t think he’s going to be the type of receiver that wins 1:1 battles on his own. I would give him a high bust potential percentage in Tennessee.

*Also, to conclude this week’s Titans Draft Roundup, I wanted to come in and go scorched Earth on this fan base for its treatment of AJ Brown this past week, but I refrained because it’s ultimately a waste of time. It never gets better no matter how much you’re all ridiculed. This weird toxic mess that is Titans Twitter can be a real cesspool of clueless and baseless takes and it honestly makes me hate that the internet gave some of you a platform to rattle your stupid ideas around and infect the brains of other equally stupid people and then I have to see your brain vomit every day when I log in to Twitter. Be better, and be decent to these athletes, who – I know this might be difficult for some of you to comprehend – are actually human beings, too. Not to mention, they don’t owe you shit. Not to mention, sports are still entertainment and if you’re getting so bent out of shape over this that you’re angry online on a daily basis, maybe you just shouldn’t be a sports fan. Not to mention, okay wait…I’m getting carried away. I’m NOT going scorched Earth. Morons.

*As it stands, the Titans currently have seven picks in the 2022 NFL Draft:

  • 1st round, 26th overall
  • 3rd round, 90th overall
  • 4th round, 131st overall
  • 4th round, 143rd overall
  • 5th round, 169th overall
  • 6th round, 204th overall
  • 6th round, 219th overall
