One Day, I Am Going to Disappear From the Internet to Go Hand-make Rope

One day, not too long ago, I made a joke about how one day I was just going to disappear from the internet one of these days, and none of you would ever hear from me again. The joke missed, because it was actually kind of sad if you stopped to think about it, but I was too committed to the bit to back out once it was out there. But, when I say stuff like that, this is the kind of lifestyle I have in mind. Forgetting that the entire world exists, and just living within the peace of a Renaissance Festival somewhere making handmade rope.

Is this ASMR? I can’t decide. If it is, it’s the unintentional variety. Regardless, it was an outright pleasure to listen to this. It’s that rare blend of informative and also soothing. I don’t know what it is, I could just watch people work all day. I don’t want to do the grunt work myself, but I’m fascinated by watching someone else doing it and learning about it. I’d just go around from booth to booth until people started calling me out for not actually doing anything.

But, in all seriousness, there is absolutely something to be said for slowing down and doing things by hand like we used to in the olden days. I read In Praise of Slowness back when I was in college, and it really opened my eyes to the importance of slowing down every once in awhile. One of the things I like to do is cook – carefully measuring ingredients, slicing up veggies, slow cooking chicken. There’s nothing that takes my brain out of everyday life like finding a new recipe to try. I also like to paint. It takes a lot of work for me to be able to relax, but this act of “slowing down” has always done the trick for me and I’d be an irresponsible blogger if I didn’t pass along such tips to you guys. Plus, you just feel better when you’ve made something with your hands and have something to show for your work. Check out In Praise of Slowness and let’s go make some rope by hand.

I don’t even know what I’d need rope for. Maybe I could just sell it. Either way, if I’ve gone missing from the internet for an extended period of time, check your nearest Renaissance Fair and/or the woods and you just might find me.
