First things first, go subscribe to Drinking With… on Apple Podcasts (or wherever you take in your shows for that matter), and check out our catalog of fun episodes as Steven McCash walks us through movies that have surpassed the legal drinking age. Now that you’ve done that (thank you), let’s talk about our latest episode on Super Troopers.
We went on a run there for awhile on Drinking With… when we watched some of these comedy movies that we absolutely loved 21 years ago only to discover our feelings about them have changed in the time since. I was always a big Dude, Where’s My Car? guy until I re-watched it and wanted to punch my younger self in the face. The same was the case with, as much as I hate to admit it, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. So, when we landed on Super Troopers for our most recent episode of Drinking With…, I was a little apprehensive.
These Broken Lizard movies – Super Troopers, Club Dread, Beerfest – they all hold a special place in my heart. They take me back every time one is on my screen. It’s not a nostalgic thing as much as it just reminds me of being a young gun, thinking the possibilities of what I could do with my life were endless. Of course, real life has jaded me and beaten me down to the point that now, as a 35 year old man, I feel that sounds pretty foolish. But, before I even knew I wanted to be a writer, I watched Club Dread and thought that I wanted to create something like that with my friends. That level of camaraderie always shines through in Broken Lizard’s movies.
Now, there were a few times that I cringed watching Super Troopers, remembering specific scenes that took the breath out of my lungs in 2001, and just not gettin’ it in 2022. But, it wasn’t nearly as bad as some of the other comedies of the era. I found myself chuckling at little things that I probably didn’t catch as a teenager. All in all, it was a good experience. Maybe that is because of the fire I felt watching those movies back in the day, not knowing if I’d ever be good enough to write one myself, but knowing damn well I wanted to create something because of ’em.
In some way, maybe there is no SoBros Network if not for Broken Lizard. We don’t get this deep on the podcast, I promise. It’s just something I’ve been thinking about ever since. Also, I say “no matter what,” but what I really mean is “until these guys are canceled for just reasons…“
