Nick Caserio and Dameon Pierce Have Screwed the Whole League Up

How dare the Houston Texans give Dameon Pierce an extra $25K?!?!

This news is two weeks old, I know. But, I’m just getting around to it. Give me a break – I’ve been busy. I have a day job, people. Nonetheless, it was one of those things that when I saw people tweeting about, I just had to weigh in on. Apparently, the entire NFL is enduring a log jam of 4th draft picks not signing their contracts because of what the Houston Texans have done. That’s right – GM Nick Caserio gave stud 4th rounder, Dameon Pierce, an extra $25,000 and now every other 4th round draft pick in the NFL wants it too.

I think that’s kind of a funny notion because of how money works in the NFL, and what I mean by that is that money is fake in the NFL. Just look at the Los Angeles Rams – I’m not saying they’re crooks…I’m just saying I have no idea how they’ve been able to do what they do with the salary cap in order to pay all these guys to come win Super Bowls with them. So, you can’t convince me that none of y’all can come up with a measly little $25,000 to throw at your 4th rounders.

I know that your draft spot is supposed to determine how much you get paid. But, folks, it’s $25,000. That’s like the equivalent of my friend leaving his wallet at home when we go to Subway. “Yeah, dude – of course I’ve got you…it’s just Subway.” Maybe it sets a weird precedent with 4th round picks and beyond, but Caserio seems to think this is the way of the future, and I’m certainly not going to tell him that he’s not clairvoyant. Regardless, word got around that the rest of the NFL was a little aggravated by the situation, and Caserio weighed in on the matter himself.

Courtesy of TexansWire:

“The fact that there’s been commentary about this has been kind of laughable, but it is what it is,” Caserio said. “Everybody’s got a philosophy. So, if they want to be pissed off and blame somebody, I guess they can blame me for screwing the whole league up.”

I love the pettiness. Just calling out the whiny bitching, and going with the passive aggressive overly dramatic “sky is falling I screwed up the whole league” bit. It’s great. I have even more respect for the job this man has done in Houston now.

By the way, Pierce is a damn good running back, and I absolutely think he’s worth an extra $25K. This man could end up being the starting running back for the Texans this season (all due respect to Rex Burkhead, of course)! He runs with authority, and is capable of handling a heavy workload. The full extent of my scouting report during the lead-up to this year’s NFL Draft was “Pierce runs like a damn wrecking ball.” It’s incredible – I hadn’t watched much of him before attending the Senior Bowl back in February, but came away impressed. He definitely made the most of that week, and parlayed it into a 4th round selection. I don’t think he could’ve landed in a better spot, either.

The Texans are a team that isn’t as far away as people think. They absolutely slaughtered the draft this year (hope you’re feeling better about that Derek Stingley Jr. drafting, Sean). Pierce aside, Kenyon Green was one of my highest-floor candidate in this year’s draft. I love John Metchie III as a polished route runner and smooth strider in the open field. Jalen Pitre is a versatile game changer at safety. And, they got good value in Christian Harris and Thomas Booker. I look at this crop of new talent and think the future is bright in Houston.

It’s just a shame none of it will matter since Caserio messed up the whole league. Damn.
