In case you haven’t noticed, we talk about movies an awful lot around these parts. In fact, I dare say we have more movie content on the site than anything other than football. During the early onset of the covid-19 pandemic, back when the streets were bare, and things were really locked down, the team got together and came up with a list of a bunch of random movies that you should take the opportunity to see if you hadn’t already. It was a way to add some entertainment to your quarantine, and we had a lot of fun that was much-needed at the time. I was thinking about doing this again some time soon – not sure why the idea popped back into my head, but I figured it’d be a fun bit to launch here on Patreon…just completely random movies that we love. Also, I have no idea where you can actually stream/watch these. That’s on you – otherwise, this would be one of those “what’s on Netflix this week” kind of articles…
Random Movie Journal, Vol. 2
Wolf – I can’t believe this bat shit crazy movie exists. Jack Nicholson becoming a werewolf – that’s all you need to know. It’s so insane. I had no idea this movie existed until I just came across it scrolling through Tubi one day. Michelle Pfeiffer and James Spader certainly help. This is one of those odd ‘moment in time’ type of movies. It became an instant part of my #SpookySeason viewing plan.
The Watch – What a collection of comedic talent – Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, and a strong supporting cast. The 2000s have been a great era for comedy if you’re into that style of humor. The Watch hits just as hard as the Dodgeballs, This is the Ends, and the like, but for whatever reason, it doesn’t seem to get the same amount of love as those classics. I think it’s worth a re-watch – let me know where you’d put it among the grand pantheon of 2000s comedies.
Crazy Stupid Love – I’m not typically a rom-com guy, but this movie is one of the greatest of all time because of it’s nifty little plot, humor, and commanding performances from Steve Carrell, Ryan Gosling, and Emma Stone. I came across it on a streaming platform that I conveniently can’t remember right now now not too long ago and decided to sit down and enjoy it again. It’s the perfect date night movie.
Nobody – A slept-on, fun little action movie from last year. Now, when I say ‘fun,’ I really mean ‘incredibly violent,’ but you get my drift. Just a great, gritty performance from Bob Odenkirk….who knew he could be such a convincing and credible action star? I’d definitely call Nobody a pleasant surprise if you’re looking for a good old fashioned revenge story.
Antwone Fisher – Flip the calendar back to 2002 for a look at a Denzel Washington drama that is often overlooked in his exhaustive resumé. It’s easy to see how that can happen when you look at his deep, rich filmography, but I think you have two really good performances between Derek Luke and him. I remember seeing this for the first time and thinking that Luke was about to skyrocket to fame. Interesting that it didn’t quite work out that way. Regardless, this one’s worth a watch.
If you check any of these out this weekend, be sure to let me know what you think!
