I’m so grateful to have one more year in the books at CFF. And what a year it was! I blasted through so many impressive movies, but these are a few of my favorites from the 2022 festival.

LANDLOCKED (2018):
This was a fresh take on the home video genre, and it definitely worked for me. This film is all about revisiting the past, and how brutal that can be sometimes. Eerie, mysterious, and melancholic, I felt myself waiting for the other shoe to drop the whole time watching this. I wouldn’t label it as “horror”, but there was a shadowy scene that legitimately creeped me out so much that I made my partner go with me to take the dog outside that night. Hats off to the filmmakers for that one.

BITCHASS (2022):
A fun revenge story that has potential to be a cult classic. I would love to see what this movie could have done with a heftier budget- but without taking away any of its charm. Writers Jonathan Colomb and Bill Posley had a truly unique idea here while still paying homage to the hood horror classics we all know and love. The editing and split screen graphics felt like they added to the “win or lose” theme of the film and were a nice touch. This is the type of movie that film festivals are all about. Bitch Assall heart… and a little bit of blood.

HISTORY OF METAL AND HORROR (2021):
This was a perfect opportunity during the CFF to relax, crack open a beer, and listen to your favorite metal heads geek out about the movies that led them to seek further shelter into the horror genre. Metal and horror have always felt like two sides of the same socially rejected coin, and this documentary discusses how and why the two play off of each other so well. It’s the definition of a love letter film, although I could’ve used a bit more “history”. A fun watch for fans of both genres.

SNAKE GIRL AND THE SILVER HAIRED WITCH (1968):
My favorite feature from the whole festival. Spooky, dreamy, and a bit harrowing at times. All the things I love and want from a film! Directed by Noriaku Yuasa in 1968, this film explores the weird and wonderful style of Japanese horror as we follow a young girl who has just been reunited with her “eccentric” family after living in an orphanage. I am not sure how this downright creepy film was targeted towards children, but I guess the 60’s were just wild like that. Snake Girl flew under the radar for so long, but it was finally released on blu-ray by Arrow in 2021.

THE LEECH (2022): BEST FEATURE
Honestly, this movie stressed me the hell out, and that’s what made it so great. A holiday horror comedy (?) directed by Eric Pennycoff, The Leech is anything but holy. Maybe..hole-y..

Our main character, a priest, takes in two drug and alcohol abusing nutcases in the name of the lord, and everything goes off the rails after he gets to know who they really are. Graham Skipper is fantastic as Father David, and watching him slowly lose his cool during what is supposed to be the jolliest time of year is just downright entertaining. Throw this one on at the holiday family party, and see who can stick it out the longest.
