CFB Roundup: College Football is BACK, Baby!

The college football went hard this past weekend.

Let’s dive into the week that was in college football and hit all the highlights on the SoBros Network’s College Football Roundup.

Me after watching all of that electric college football action over the weekend:

*What an unbelievable weekend of college football – color me stunned that the action was as relentless and electric as it was pretty much all weekend. But, to start this column off, let’s dial this back all the way to Thursday. Thursday was a reminder of just how important and just how unpredictable some of college football’s classic rivalry games can be. The Pittsburgh Panthers hosted the West Virginia Mountaineers as the Backyard Brawl was revived, and if you happened to have forgotten what college football was all about, this game reminded you of everything we love about the sport. It was back and forth, tight, with some scintillating plays. I liked West Virginia heading into this game, and they covered, but really, they should’ve won that game. “They should’ve won that game” was a recurring theme throughout the weekend, which brings me to that game between the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Purdue Boilermakers. I’ll never bet on Purdue again after they pissed that game away. Nonetheless, it felt good to have college football back, and after that slate of games, I’m hoping the stars align for more rivalry games on that opening Thursday moving forward.

*Friday night even had some electric action with the Old Dominion Monarchs upsetting the Virginia Tech Hokies. What happened? How did we get here? I mean, I’m happy for Old Dominion fans, but has Virginia Tech fallen this far? Big yikes in Blacksburg. The boring slugfest between the Illinois Fighting Illini and the Indiana Hoosiers might have set the sport back 40 years, and I’m beginning to think Bret Bielema is doing this to us on purpose, but at least we got this ridiculous hit out of the game.

*The contest between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Appalachian State Mountaineers may have well just stolen the show for the entire weekend. Us college football whores love our shootouts, and we got a doozy of a shootout between these two teams Saturday afternoon. Just when it looked like North Carolina was pulling away, App State roared back with 40 points in the 4th quarter. 40 points in one quarter! That’s insane! North Carolina barely survived the contest, 63-61, much like App State’s kickoff team barely survived the game. Y’all might want to work on this one the next time you go for an onside kick.

*What a disappointing performance from the NC State Wolfpack. I can appreciate the announce team talking about what a heavyweight fight it was, and how both teams were beating the hell out of each other because they were. There was a lot of reckless abandon in this football game, but at times, it looked like ECU just wanted it more. A team that has hopes of an ACC title can’t have that. They were playing a little too softly in that game, and makes me wonder about the mental makeup of this team once it faces adversity. NC State is only 1-0 because ECU’s kicker missed an extra point AND missed what would’ve been the game winning field goal.

*I’m not ready to fully retract my statement that “the Georgia Bulldogs could lose twice this season” just yet (because I’m a hater). But, I am willing to go ahead and say that any hopes the Oregon Ducks had of making a playoff run are officially dead and buried. What a downright ass beating.

*The game between the Utah Utes and the Florida Gators captured the essence of what makes college football’s regular season so special. It’s Week 1 and it’s already a de facto elimination game for Utah. Essentially, the Utes needed that win or they’d face the pressure of running the table to get into the College Football Playoff. With Cam Rising throwing a red zone pick with only a few seconds left on the clock, any hope of winning this one was flushed down the drain. I questioned why, with 35 seconds left on the clock, Utah didn’t elect to run the ball at least once. With the way they had been pounding the Gators defense all night, one or two good runs could’ve put the final nail in the coffin. But, the decision was made to put the ball in the air, and Rising made a bad decision to throw it to the middle of the field, which was occupied by seemingly 25 Florida Gators. Utah lost a tight one that it probably should have won. The Gators kicking off the Billy Napier era with a win over the #7 team in the country makes for an intriguing start to the season. Anthony Richardson made some questionable throws at times, but by and large, he was an outright force on offense. How far can this team go?

*Don’t look now, but the Vanderbilt Commodores are 2-0 and only one win away from hitting that over (2.5) on total wins for the season. It’s one of my favorite storylines of the young season so far. Is it necessarily surprising considering they’ve played Hawaii and Elon? Probably not, but I think The Mike Wright Show taking off the way it has is a little surprising. They’re averaging a veritable boat load of points through two games. It’s at a point where they’re only about a touchdown underdog to Wake Forest. Is that crazy? Who’s to say? But, I’ll say this – if they can manage to upset Wake Forest AND go on to beat Northern Illinois to start 4-0, watch out. This season could very well take on a different dynamic than Dores fans expect.

*Also, the MTSU Blue Raiders are confirmed not back after taking a drubbing at the hands of James Madison (the school, not the dude).

*The drama to come out of the LSU TigersFlorida State Seminoles game was phenomenal. You had Seminoles players talking trash to the frat bros after the game. Brian Kelly was busting veins in his neck yelling at officials. Kayshon Boutte practically left the fucking program. And, the Tigers totally shit the bed. It was not the start I was expecting for Kelly and LSU. I’ve said all summer that LSU will come along as Kelly’s system and culture find their footing, but damn, I didn’t realize they were THIS far away. Also, is it possible that noted good football coach Mike Norvell simply finally got it right at Florida State? They’re 2-0….maybe they’re actually good?
