Why on Earth Would Mark Stoops Want to Leave Kentucky for Nebraska?

Mark Stoops is a made man at Kentucky. Why leave? And, why on Earth would Nebraska be the destination???

The Nebraska Cornhuskers program has devolved into one of the most entertaining shit shows in all of college football over the last few seasons. But, it finally came to a head on Saturday. Losing to Georgia Southern to drop to 1-2 was just too much for Scott Frost to keep on coaching. They canned his ass after that one. Why Frost never found success in Lincoln is fascinating to me. He was expected to take the Big Ten West by storm and revive the Nebraska program to its glory days. But, it just never worked. I need someone to write a big think piece about it STAT. Make the 30 for 30 now! We can posit our theories all we want, but that’s a different discussion for a different article. The point I’m here to make today is that Nebraska is looking for new head coaching candidates, and for whatever reason, the head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats, Mark Stoops, keeps popping up on these coaching candidate lists.

Why? WHY?!?! Can someone please tell me why Stoops would choose to leave Lexington for Lincoln? If you think it’s money, this man could turn right around to Kentucky with whatever Nebraska offered him and probably get double to stay. They’re going to build statues for this man in Lexington! He just became Kentucky’s all time winningest coach on Saturday when they upset the Florida Gators and popped the Anthony Richardson hype bubble! He is as made a man as a man can be made at Kentucky. He has spent YEARS building that Wildcats program to a point where it is consistently successful in the SEC. The same SEC that also happens to be the greatest conference in college football. His only real competition right now is the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC East, but he’s at least gotten that program up to a point where 10 wins and a New Years Six bowl game are on the table every season.

Why would he want to put all of that work into Kentucky, where he can probably name his dollar amount too, just to make a lateral move to do the same thing he’s spent the last decade doing at Kentucky? What is so appealing about the Nebraska job that it would so strongly pull him away from all he’s built and all he’s earned at Kentucky? I think we’ve seen that it’s grown harder and harder to recruit in the Big Ten. The conference is just as top heavy and loaded as the SEC, and the Cornhuskers are so far behind that it would take years for them to be competitive again.

Hell, I’m not even sure it’s a lateral move at this point. It seems like a total step down. Not to completely shit on the Nebraska program, but that might be an understatement. It seems like a total step off the side of a cliff. What’s really in this for Stoops? No one can give a good, definitive answer to that question, and that’s why I ultimately think this is all just bullshit.

I think what we’re really getting at here is that Nebraska fans have just lost touch with reality. The program isn’t what it used to be and it’s nowhere near as valuable to college football as fans think. People see that uniform and they think about an era that passed 30 years ago! This could totally also be one of those things that no one thinks could actually happen but then it actually happens because the root of these rumors ended up being legitimate sources. Who really knows? I know one thing – I damn sure am not putting any money on Stoops becoming the next Nebraska head coach!
