High Drama: Estranged Brothers Battling to Become Mayor of Ontario Town

You just can't make this stuff up, folks.

I’ve come across a lot of stories in my 10 years on the internet. I can’t tell you how many times I have read something, pondered the existence of humanity itself, and then read something again just to make sure my brain was processing it correctly. Today, folks – we have one such story on our hands. It’s one that I read and immediately said to myself, “you just can’t make this shit up.” There is high drama in the Canadian town of Port Colborne (west of Buffalo on the coastline of Lake Erie per my incredible detective skills (Google Maps)), where two brothers are battling to become the city’s mayor. The catch? These men haven’t spoken in 30 years after a massive falling-out.

When Charles Steele stepped on to a debate stage last week, it was the first time since the election campaign began that he’d confronted his lone opponent in a bitterly contested race to become mayor of a small Canadian town. The encounter also marked the first time he’d spoken to his brother Bill – the incumbent mayor – in more than 30 years.

What a fascinating story – I’d suggest taking the time to read the full piece by The Guardian. It’s amazing. This is like the plot of a Netflix show or something, I swear. It’s full of intrigue. We’ve all fallen out of touch with folks before. I dare say we’ve all even gotten into it with our relatives. Shit happens. But, I don’t think most of us are holding decades-long grudges over it. Most of us are definitely not running for mayor either. So, it just amplifies the bizarreness of it all – imagine holding such a strong and spiteful grudge towards someone for 30 years, and when you finally speak to said person, it’s because they’re your opponent in a mayoral race. That doesn’t sound like real life! One of the brothers actually ran because no one else was going to run against his brother! How cold-blooded is that?!?! I love it! I’m here for it! Get your popcorn ready!

I will say, though – “The Brothers Steele” even has a nice little ring to it. Netflix, HBO Max, Tubi – someone needs to get on this STAT. The Guardian goes on to report that this mayoral race has actually made things worse between the two brothers. You got ’em calling each other names, and now, this story has really put Port Colborne into the public spotlight. Hell, I’m writing about it down here in Nashville, Tennessee! Y’all got hillbillies like me wondering wtf is going on! I think that’s ultimately the most interesting question surrounding this story – what do we think caused this conflict? No one seems to know and they’re not saying anything.

I’m not in the habit of insinuating things about public officials who check the internet for such things and go after the media, so I’m not going to venture a guess. But if I were the type to do such a thing, I’d wager that one brother put his balls on the other’s drum kit.
