It’s a big day in the film world, folks – the nominees for the 2023 Oscars have been announced. You can see the full list here. But, if you’ve already read the list and just want to catch a stray opinion or two, read on for my thoughts on this year’s field.
The Expected
- Everything Everywhere All at Once led this year’s field with 11 nominations, but it also felt like Tár, Elvis, The Banshees of Inisherin, and The Fabelmans were in every category. It certainly looks like that’s your main event field this year. Banshees was my #1 from 2022, but looking at the way these fields played out, I think there’s a chance that this is one of those films that is nominated for everything but wins nothing. I hope I’m wrong!
- If y’all don’t give this Best Actress award to Michelle Yeoh, I’m going to fucking riot.
- The Best Actor field is a three-horse race. We talked about it recently on an episode of The Vick’s Flicks Podcast, but it certainly feels like Austin Butler, Colin Farrell, and Brendan Fraser are going to duke it out for that one. My hope is for Farrell to get it, but I don’t think I’d be disappointed either way.
- I love the Supporting Actor field, but man…this award is there for the taking for Ke Huy Quan. If he gets it, I already know I’m going to cry like a baby when he accepts that trophy.
- It seems like we’re going to get some interesting battles on the technical side of things between The Batman, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Top Gun: Maverick. I’m curious to see how those all play out.
- I guess Tom Cruise didn’t get that dark horse acting nom after all.
The Surprises
- Maybe I was in the dark on this one more so than my colleagues. I knew All Quiet on the Western Front would be an awards player, but holy shit. It got nine nominations, behind only EEAAO’s 11! I felt like this picture ended up in 90% of the categories, including Best Picture. This movie is out there still being nominated for awards as I type this post, probably.
- When you have 10 spots up for grabs in Best Picture, there are always those couple of ‘wild card’ spots to borrow a term from the football world. They ended up being Triangle of Sadness and Women Talking this year. I haven’t seen either of those yet, but I still feel justified in saying Marcel the Shell was ROBBED!
- Ana de Armas got into the Best Actress field, and *sigh* I guess that means I have to watch Blonde now.
- I am so fucking jacked that Stephanie Hsu got into the Supporting Actress field. All due respect to Jamie Lee Curtis, but if you’re going to nominate her for EEAAO, you can’t overlook Hsu, who I thought was better in the film. I hope the Academy listened to our Vick’s Flicks Podcast episode on this subject.
- Man, props to Brian Tyree Henry for getting into the Supporting Actor category for Causeway.
- Andrea Riseborough….over Viola Davis and Danielle Deadwyler… *raises eyebrows*
- It was kind of a quiet morning for Babylon – I know it got a few noms, but it didn’t work its way into any of the bigger categories, and that’s at least a little surprising….right?
- No RRR in the International Feature Film category – that’s a bummer. It was one of my favorites of the year. Hopefully, they can snag that Best Original Song Oscar.
- I am stoked for Navalny getting into Documentary Feature Film category – I haven’t seen any of the other nominees, but I’m just saying. Navalny ruled.
