We overhauled our Patreon a little over a year ago. The original vision for it was to put our most loyal supporters in the pirate ship with us. You’d get to be apart of all of our behind-the-scenes stuff, and I’d share the story of SoBros Network, how we came to be, and what he had planned for the future with you. But, after four years of that, we got to a point where SoBros Network was pretty self-sustaining. To me, the scrappy underdog story had kind of fizzled out. Things were a little more stable, and to me, it made our story grow a little more stale. It was the same stuff over and over.
So, we decided to overhaul it. All of that content is still there and available for $5/month, but we’ve made an effort to build out a more robust content library under the simple philosophy of “more of what you love.” SoBros humor, movie talk, sports coverage – it’s all there. Last year, we launched four new Patreon exclusive podcasts, and we moved Sports Punch from the main feeds to Patreon-exclusive. Of course, you still get the casual episode of The Patreon Files every other month too. In addition to The SoBros Sitdown, Wrestling With The Past, and the SoBros Collectors Room, we debuted The Movie Review Rewind Podcast, on which we pick an old movie, and there’s really no reason or rhyme to it…just whatever we feel like that month, and we dive into it. That simple. We’ve recorded nine episodes so far – seven of those have been released (you can expect the other two on the first days of April and May respectively). So, I decided to write this post and share the catalog with all of our supporters so that you can get a complete picture of the type of content you’re getting when you decide to help us chase our crazy dreams by subscribing to our Patreon.
The Movie Review Rewind Podcast on Patreon
- Ep. 01: The Wrestler – A fitting place to start. It’s one of mine and Brandon’s favorite movies, and it features an iconic performance from Mickey Rourke.
- Ep. 02: The Departed – Pretty close to a perfect movie. It was an instant classic when it came up, and it holds up to this day.
- Ep. 03: Movie 43 – I would consider this the worst movie that I’ve ever seen. How this thing was made is an absolutely flooring story, and I loved learning about it.
- Ep. 04: WALL-E – This is an example of the gift of this show. I had never seen this movie before Brandon said “hey, let’s do a show on WALL-E.” Now I know what I was missing for all these years. You can too if you stay tuned to The Movie Review Rewind Podcast.
- Ep. 05: Sideways – Another all-time classic in my book. Paul Giamiatti. Thomas Haden Church. What more do I need to say?
- Ep. 06: Batman (1989) – Some interesting perspective on this pop cultural sensation from McCash, Sean, and Brandon. I sat this one out to make way for one of the biggest Batman fans I know and a guy who lived through the movie’s release.
- Ep. 07: Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) – There’s a reason we sat around quoting Anchorman before memes were invented. I saw this movie three times in theaters. I make no apologies, and no, I’m not ashamed of myself.
- Ep. 08: Citizen Kane (1941) – Part of the fun of The Movie Review Rewind Podcast is going back in time to experience things we’ve never seen before. Watching this movie felt like hopping in a time machine. Citizen Kane was a master class in filmmaking, and seeing it for the first time through a modern lens made for a fun show.
- Ep. 09: Smokin’ Aces (2006) – It’s always fun to relive movies we thought were super cool when we were younger to see how they hold up. I felt this one held up a lot better than some of the other flicks from that era, but I could sense that Brandon was feeling a little cringe about liking this movie at one point.
- Ep. 10: No Country for Old Men (2007) – Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and Tommy Lee Jones deliver all-time powerhouse performances in a neo-Western thriller that sees the worst in humanity. Stylistically speaking, No Country for Old Men is pulpy and tense. It’s no wonder it won Best Picture that year at the Academy Awards.
- Ep. 11: Good Time (2017) – Those Safdie Brothers have a knack for making people sweat. We saw it in Uncut Gems, but before that, they did it with the Robert Pattinson-led Good Time in 2017. This one’s not the easiest of watches, as it’s an adrenaline rush from start to finish, but Pattinson is fantastic in one of his more underrated roles.
- Ep. 12: Hustle & Flow (2005) – How did Terrence Howard not become a megastar after this role? It’s a sweaty, gritty look at the Memphis music scene and Howard delivers one of if not his best performance yet. Between the story, the music, and the acting, this one has that “underrated classic” status.
- Ep. 13: Dead Poets Society (1989) – Throughout the years, I’ve landed on Dead Poets Society being my favorite movie of all time. There’s so much rich, hearty fat to chew on with this one, from the ambiance, the performance from Robin Williams, and the theme of thinking for yourself and beyond. I watch it every September, so I was ecstatic that Brandon was willing to cover it for September’s episode.
- Ep. 14: Nosferatu (1922) – Brandon and I dove into the annals of film history for this one. It’s just a shame we missed the 100th anniversary of this film by a year. We both watched it for the first time to prep for this podcast. I really dug the vibes and picked up a copy of the 100th anniversary Blu Ray down at Danger Zone Video as soon as I had the chance.
- Ep. 15: Queen of the Damned (2002) – Had I actually seen this movie for the first time in 2002, young Stoney probably would’ve called it the coolest movie ever made. It’s campy for sure, but Brittany and I both enjoy it and that made for a fun conversation.
- Ep. 16: Freaky (2020) – A new addition to the Spooky Season rotation, Freaky might’ve slipped through the covid cracks from 2020. Rest assured, Steven McCash and I are doing our part to make sure people don’t forget about it!
- Ep. 17: Scooby-Doo (2002) – I’m not so sure I agree with the ‘Spooky Season vibes’ in this one. To me, it’s always felt like a summer movie, but I can certainly understand why the streaming services throw this one in the family Halloween section each year. It was fun to relive this film with Brittany.
- Ep. 18: Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) – Brandon and Sean joined me for this episode, and if I’m not mistaken, we all watched this film for the first time in preparation of this show. It was trippy as hell, but how can you not fall for the intoxicating demeanor that Gary Oldman brings to Dracula?
- Ep. 19: Brokeback Mountain (2005) – As you guys know, we only discuss the brightest most uplifting movies here on The Movie Review Rewind Podcast!
- Ep. 20: A Christmas Story (1983) – I’ve seen this one before and always found it to be the most boring and overrated Christmas movie on the holiday slate. Brandon and I re-watched it for a festive holiday episode to try and find what so many love about it.
- Ep. 21: Moonrise Kingdom (2012) – We kicked this one out when Wes Anderson’s name popped back up for Asteroid City. We figured it was the perfect time to revisit one of if not the absolute best from his filmography.
