Let's dive into the game of Georgia Bulldogs left tackle Broderick Jones on this edition of Titans First Round Options.

The 2023 NFL Draft takes place April 27-29 this year, emanating LIVE from Kansas City, Missouri. As it stands, the Tennessee Titans have one first round draft pick. New general manager Ran Carthon and head coach Mike Vrabel currently hold the 11th overall selection. Over the next couple of months, I’ll be taking a look at some of the prospects who are either rumored to be tied to, have met with, who make sense for the Titans, or who are for some reason being mocked to the Titans even though they don’t really have a need at the position. Whatever – there are no rules here. Today, we’re lookin’ at Georgia left tackle Broderick Jones.

Well, this is awkward. News trickled out Monday evening that the Titans had agreed to terms on a three-year $29M deal for Eagles left tackle Andre Dillard. That’s not necessarily a bridge player like I expected them to sign, folks. Dillard has some bona fide upside here and could put a stranglehold on the left tackle spot for the foreseeable future. That means left tackle is likely off the board for the team at #11. I mean…never say never, of course. The Titans could draft Paris Johnson Jr. or Jones and slide Dillard in at left guard. I think he’s the plan at left tackle, though. Nonetheless, I had already started this little report on Jones, and I am so incredibly OCD about this stuff, that I can’t start it and not finish it. So, here’s what I’ve got on Jones even though I think he’s off the table for this team now.

He is a punisher as a run-blocker who plays his best when he can get out in the open field and hunt someone down to put in the dirt at the second level. He has all of the size and physical tools you want in a franchise left tackle, but sometimes he lurches and reaches when his technique isn’t so sharp. I felt like he was a little too top heavy at times, and that’s something that savvy edge rushers can take advantage of at the next level. BJ Ojulari had some nice reps against him in the SEC Championship where Jones would lower his head, reach, and Ojulari would punch a shoulder or club his arms to throw him off balance. If he lands with a coaching staff that can coach that out of him, he could end up being the best all-around tackle in this draft class. I can see that vision because of his size and physicality. But, I want to see more consistency out of him in pass protection before I say he’s already there. He loses control of his guy way too much.

Jones had a nice Combine. Jones was running drills with a solid, wide base. If you’re differentiating between he and Johnson, I’d say Johnson has the overall speed and technique, where Jones has the base and the power in space and at the second level. I also think Johnson is way further along than Jones in terms of overall polish. It all depends on what a team wants. I’d say Jones does look like the type of tackle the Titans would covet from an intangibles standpoint – a potential road grader with size in the run game. But, he’s a lot more raw than people seem to be thinking.
