It’s long overdue, folks. I know it. You know it…well, maybe you know it….at least, if you’ve been keeping up with ‘Nashville Reviews’ here on SoBros Network, you know it’s long overdue. Slim & Husky’s has become a veritable culinary institution here in Nashville, and I’ve been dying to get out and try it for myself for years now. Thankfully, I’ve finally been able to cross it off my list, and that’s what we’re here to talk about today.

A few weeks ago, our resident film critic Brandon Vick and I had just left our interview with the cast of Quasi. We were starving, and we wanted to eat somewhere that we didn’t normally eat at considering we both live way out east of town and rarely make the trek downtown anymore. We landed on 5th & Broadway, where there’s a myriad of dining options. As soon as I saw the Slim & Husky’s sign, it was over for me…we walked up to the Assembly Food Hall, looked around, but I just kept coming back to Slim & Husky’s. “This is your chance, Stoney,” I kept repeating to myself. I know Brandon is always down to pound some pizza (he enjoys pizza – that’s not innuendo). So, I said “let’s do Slim & Husky’s” and Brandon joyously agreed. LFG. Food: 8.1/10 – Alright, let’s dig into this. As you can see above, Brandon was incredibly delighted to get his ‘Cee No Green’ – sausage, pepperoni, and Canadian bacon. Two thumbs up from the resident film critic. I got their hot chicken pizza, and it made for an interesting combination of ingredients – Nashville hot chicken, jalapenos, banana peppers, spicy honey drizzle, and served with some jalapeno ranch on the side. Hot chicken AND jalapenos always make for a dangerous combination, but with this pizza, I found that it added a nice bit of crunch to it without overbearing heat. The chicken itself was all about the Nashville hot flavor. To me, it wasn’t a violent heat, but a more subtle enjoyable heat that was balanced out by the cheese blend, and the crust itself dipped in some of that jalapeno ranch. The banana peppers gave the dish a nice tang that had me thinking we need to combine banana peppers and hot chicken more often. I’m not a crust eater, but I consumed every bit of this pizza (one of only two places I’ll do that – the other being Calabria out here in Mount Juliet). Between the flavor of the hot chicken, the heat and the crunch from the fresh jalapenos, the tang of the banana peppers, and the sweetness of the honey drizzle, this made for a creative combination of flavors that made a lasting impression on me. I can’t wait to get another one of these bad boys.

Booze: n/a – Didn’t even notice that they had a selection of beer and wine or else I would’ve pounded some. Next time.

Value: 7.5/10 – I’m going to be honest. I don’t even remember what I paid…I just remember thinking I’d pay a lot more at a fancy sitdown establishment and that felt like a great value. I shouldn’t have waited nearly a month to write the review…

Atmosphere: 7.2/10 – Nice, clean dining area. I loved the automated ordering part. The guy there helping people with it was super nice when us old timers didn’t know what the fuck we were doing. Great spot.

Overall: 7.6/10 – Yep. I get the hype. No gripes with Slim & Husky’s becoming the Nashville institution it has, and am stoked to see their business empire grow (Sacramento, stand up!). This 7.6 puts it at 10th among the 70 Nashville area restaurants we’ve reviewed. This lunch hit like an oasis in the desert – I wanted something comforting, satisfying, creative, and flavorful and Slim & Husky’s checked all the boxes.
